Anyhow, thanks again and Happy Holidays.

Thanks for the advice, Bob. You’re right about it being a pain in the pooper.
The black generator I’m using is a bit of a relic, and it puts out a 720×486 29.97 black signal, as far as I can tell.
I dug into the operation menu in the VTR, and while I didn’t find an option that lets you sync to an SD source, I found the option where you can set the Ref In to Automatic, which I did.. although that didn’t work alone. I will try to set the VTR to accept an SD In reference signal tomorrow morning and see how that goes. I had a feeling there was some setting in the machine that did that.. but I didn’t have the patience to find it myself :/
I am definitely working in 59.94.
And now, the stupid question – if I’m recording HD to the deck, does the reference signal NEED to also be HD, or can an SD reference be used to sync two HD devices?
Thanks again for the reply, Bob.

Hey Tyler.. I think I’ve found something to make it work. I tried this for a few outputs yesterday and it went off with no problems. Here’s what I did:
– set 10 second preroll in Device Control Presets
– under AV Devices in Audio/Video settings, I de-selected “Mirror on desktop”
– in the timeline RT tab I set the pulldown to 2:3:3:2 (from 2:3:2:3)Seems to work. I output a sequence of 8 x :30 second spots with no problem. Let me know if this works for you.

Hey – just wanted to chime in here since this is almost the same workflow we have. I posted on another forum about this: when I do the downconvert through the Kona I can’t get the tape to start recording at the right frame.. and audio/video go out of sync. So, I’m reduced to going through Compressor or After Effects to manually downconvert the frame, add 3:2 pulldown and then edit to tape. Has anyone here encountered this? Should I not post in this thread? Lemme know.

Hey Tyler.. doesn’t seem to be much info on this. I may contact AJA at some point today or next week. I wonder if we should have splurged for a Kona 3 instead of the LHe, if the problem is LHe specific. Or, perhaps a different box altogether would be a solve. I hear the new Matrox box is pretty solid.
Someone a while back mentioned the problem might be the PCI-Express configuration – in that the Mac doesn’t recognize the AJA card as a video card, simply as a “Intel PCI-to-PCI bridge”. The people who configured our systems said that this wasn’t an issue.

Hey. Using a Sony DVW500 digibeta deck controlled via serial rs422 (from the kona).. and using the Aja Kona 1080i 29.97 playback mode in FCP and associated deck control preset. The scratch drives are a RAID system which are quite fast. They pass the disk test thing in the Kona Utils with around 330 MB/s read and write.

I set the video playback in Final CUt to play the HD footage natively (1920×1080, 23.976) and then set the Kona outputs to downconvert to 525i by letterbox from the Kona Control Panel.
If there’s an alternative way to do it.. I haven’t yet discovered it.

September 16, 2008 at 6:39 pm in reply to: Kona / FCP Batch Capture wont stop! Stop my tape!So.. update!
I switched the device control Preset to Kona LH Sony VTR A. Using the same 01:00:00:00-01:00:29:29 clip from before, I tried a batch capture. Here’s what happened.
The tape rewound to somewhere in the bars (00:59:00:00-00:59:40:00) and started recording. It kept going until my designated out point (01:00:29:29) and stopped recording. Maybe success? Then, it bounced back to the Capture dialog and said “1 CLIP – READY” so I hit cancel – and it connected the captured file.. which was 30 seconds of bars, with timecode starting at 01:00:00:00 which is really mysterious. I think I’m going to call Kona .. but surely, I can’t be the ONLY person having these issues?

September 16, 2008 at 6:32 pm in reply to: Kona / FCP Batch Capture wont stop! Stop my tape!hey Bill… that’s really weird. In my Device Control window there’s a drop-down for framerate and it was set at 29.97.. weird that yours would be blank. Good to hear you got yours going, though.
The Kona presets set comes with “NTSC Sony VTR” .. as well as “NTSC Sony VTR A” and “NTSC Sony VTR B” – I’m going to try both of those.. although something tells me it won’t work.

September 16, 2008 at 6:17 pm in reply to: Kona / FCP Batch Capture wont stop! Stop my tape!hey Jeremy.
FCP tells me that the clip is as long as I set it. here’s an example scenario: I go to Log & Capture, scrub my tape, set an in at 01:00:00:00 and set an out at 01:00:29:29. The clip is designated offline in the bin, but all the numbers are correct. It says the clip duration is 00:00:30:00, the Media start and End are what I set. Then I’ll right click on it, and do a Batch Capture.. and it will start recoding at 01:00:00:00 and just not stop at 01:00:29:29… it will go until the end of the tape, say “End of tape encountered” Then it will rewind and try again and do the exact same thing until I abort it. I’ve been doing captures and conforms for quite some time.. and it must have something to do with Kona because this only began when I upgraded… It’s not Leopard thing either because we have another Tiger system with Kona Drivers v6.0 that does the same thing.. unless it’s a final cut thing.
