The easiest method is to drag one of your imported VOB’s to the ‘New Sequence’ icon, and the correct sequence setting will automatically be set for you.

Try this…
Drive on the highway with a passenger. The passenger tells you to drive well above the speed limit. Get the passenger to sign a ‘hold-harmless’ agreement. When the trooper stops you, present the agreement and advise him that the passenger is legally responsible for any illegalities.
See how far that gets you.

I like to use HD footage in an SD frame to be able to reframe and/or add faked camera moves. However, if your system bogs with HD, there’s probably no way around downconverting.

Sorry…should have mentioned that we always converted HDV to Cineform before use in CS4, precisely because of the problems you mentioned.

As a general rule, we always create an SD and HD version of a project, and here’s our workflow.
1 – Create a sequence in the format that you’ll need first. In your case it sounds like SD. If you use your HDV footage in the SD timeline, scale your clips as needed. You’ll probably find that you can scale one clip down to fit the SD frame, then save that scale as a Motion Preset and drag that onto the other clips. Finish this sequence.
2 – Create an HD sequence of the settings you’ll need. Select and copy all of the clips in the previously edited SD timeline, and paste them into the newly created HD timeline. From this point you will most likely only need to scale the clips to fit the HD frame, again use a saved Motion Preset to automate this. If you have titles, you may need to create HD versions of them rather than simply scaling the SD versions up.

I surely couldn’t guarantee it, but if you have 44K audio on a 48K audio track, that’s certainly the first place I’d look.
Actually, what I’d try first is creating a new sequence with 44K audio and copy the other sequence’s material onto it, then import your 44K audio to that new sequence.

Since most (or all) of the sequence templates default to 48K audio, I’ll bet Jon’s answer above is exactly your problem.

I know this always sounds very simplistic, but we were experiencing very similar problems recently. Lockups would always occur during intensive processing, but never at the same exact spot in the processing. This indicated memory issues, but varying ones. One common cause of recurring but varying processing or RAM problems is heat. I opened the PC’s case and it was coated with dust. Took it outside with a n air compressor set to low, and blew out the dust. All lock-ups ceased – totally. Certainly the cheapest and easiest thing to try first. If the problem persists, try to run a free RAM diagnostics tool like MemTest.
