  • If you just add a key frame in between the two keyframes then just drag it to the spot you want, it will create a bezier path that you can adjust (including the handles)

Is the graph editor set to speed or value? When its set to speed (which is closer to how AE used to work before the graph editor) you can get kinks that look bad but actually work correctly.

  • You can also use the blend between frames button in the 60fps comp on the 12fps nested layer. This will simulate the blend we used to do optically when doing cell animation. You can also time stretch your 12fps comp when it is brought into the 60 fps comp and choose the frame blending option there too. (draft setting – jaggie line – will produce each frame is as it was and hold that frame for the next frame. Best setting – smooth diag line- will blend between the “missing”frames)

It could be a depth thing too – two layers occupying the same z depth and AE flips back and forth between the two of them as the round off calculations give different results on different frames.

  • No lasso tool in AE but just draw a bounding box around just the keyframes with the main pointer tool. Try unselecting everything first if that doesnt’ work and just bounding box the keyframes without first selecting the layer.

also if the 3D rotation that Jim suggested is done fast and you crank up the motion blur, that will cover a lot of sins.

What if you turn on the continuously rasterize button when its a precomp? (little sun icon to the right of the layer name)

I see you only have one segment on your cap. What about raising that up as well?
How are you doing the bloat?

  • I skipped 18 and went right from 16 to 19. I checked the manual as well and started scratching my head. Well at least there’s nothing wrong with my install. Most of the stuff of late has been tweaks to legacy projects so I’ve kept an R16 hanging around. I think that’s why I haven’t noticed it till now.
    Thanks for the reality correction.

If you want to upload the project I can take a look. The lights should not get brighter farther away (however if you don’t have inverse square chosen in fall off they will be the same brightness far away which might make them seem brighter because the world doesn’t work that way).

Also don’t be afraid to double up lights. You duplicate lights and leave them in the same spot but assign them to other objects or make them dimmer or turn off shadows so that you can tweak the effect you want to get. Its a great way to soften shadows when the blocking object just has too much of the dark side in it. Simply turn off the shadow for the lights twin and that light will pass right through the shadow blocker object. Then just adjust each of those light’s intensities so they add up to what you want.
