    Thanks for the reply by the way. It turns out I can’t “replace with after effects composition” because it would “require Adobe Production Premium”. If I cut a clip into a 3 second segment I can right click, change to a sub clip, rename and put it back in the bin, then drag it back from the bin to the timeline and it is now still a 3 second duration clip(this seems like a step that was unnecessary in CS3). However when I copy that subclip and paste it in AE it pops back up as an 8GB 39 minute duration clip that I started with.

    I’ll give that a try. I’m dragging the entire clip into the timeline then razoring out bits I want, dragging them back into my bin, but when I go and look at them in the bin the entire original clip is in there, not just the piece I’ve razored, highlighted and dragged. I’ve been careful to only highlight the piece of the clip I want also. In regard to the scene detection issue, I’m not sure as I wasn’t the person who filmed the footage.
