I found a workaround.. although you may not like it (you will likely have to start from scratch!)

– Delete all the events files, FCPx will require you to delete multicam clips, and the entire timeline

– FCPx allows you to drag a file from Finder directly into the timeline!

– Import a single file (I used the audio file, no issues there) to create an event.

– Create a project using the new event.

– Select all media in a Finder window to be used for the project, and drag the bulk selection into the timeline.

All the files are now in the events folder, imported correctly, and you can proceed to recreate the project.

Manually proxy and transcode as you wish.
