I did solve my problem, though in a conservative way–I went back and changed the file names back to the originals, and then went back to a previous back up that still had nearly all my work. After I restored the project which worked out just fine, I organized my source bins so they wouldn’t have any identically named files and have made sure to keep them that way. And when Premiere shows me that it’s having trouble locating files I don’t ignore the message, though I’ve just been rebooting (and deleting unused media cache files) and so far it’s all been working, though I’m still finding Premiere to be a very finicky, unreliable, and illogically coded programs (for instance, why aren’t audio presets saved in the audio tab workspace and instead are under the effects tab?).

But I would like your guide to how you fixed your problem, just in case.

Hi Karen–I see no one ever replied to your query, but now I am because I’m having the exact same problem. I had in some ways a similar situation where as a new user I wasn’t paying too much attention when the missing media box came up, and just canceled. Eventually my project got corrupted because Premiere relinked to wrong files, I had the same situation with camera cards starting over again from 0000 with 4 cards spread among two cameras. I now know I should have given those files unique names but didn’t.

I finally figured out that I should go back and give all files unique names and relink, which I did. At first I thought all was good, but when I went back to a sequence with a lot of multicam about 80% was offline. I got some to come back, but basically have been unable to link subclips back to the parent media.

And in one case (at least so far) a subclip has relinked to a completely wrong parent file, even though (as in your case), all file paths are correct.

Did you ever find a solution, or did you have to start over or ?? Are you still on Premiere? I’m and editor with many decades of experience and got Premiere because of the affordable license to have good multicam ability (and it is good as long as media is well organized) but I’m finding so much about it frustrating compared to Avid and Lightworks!
