What kind of raid are you recording to? an eSATA? If so which one are you using and how do you like it?

“Is the guy lucky” I’d say he is. Many times, in family business situations, the non-family members fare a little worse than the family.
I don’t know what your situation is, and I’m sure the people running the business are fair and equitable to all – but is that the feelings of “the troops”? Just that classification or phrase can be very telling of the family’s attitude towards the employees.
Maybe everyone at the shop is lucky that your father was entreprenurial enough to start a business and keep it running.

I really dig your show “Cash Cab!” I’ve caught a few episodes and youyr doing a great job on it.
Talking about “old” gear a few years back I did some work at a PBS station that was running Sony 1″ machines in master control (4 if memory serves) along with DigiBeta decks, Beta SP and U-matic SP. We’d edit on FCP and Media 100 and linear on Digibeta depending on the project.
Absolutely fun times and good memories there!

I’m curious about how shallow the DOF can be with the 200. With 1/3″ chips is it that hard to get in the ballpark for a run-n-gun situation? I’d love to use this camera in some field work in the future and bringing an HD LCD monitor would be a drag (but probably lighter than the Sony CRT field unit I use now)

You said “The camera does not really support “deck control” for capture like people are use to with DV cameras- it also means that while you can record back to the camera via FW it is rather rough because it is only a crash record.”
I’m a bit confused, initially I thought that FCP could do as you mention, send HD back down Firewire to the 200 for recording (not recommended as you mention) or to monitor the image out the component outs. Then I read that FCP doesn’t send out HD over Firewire nor can the camera record a stream from the Firewire port.
Which way does FCP/HVX 200 work?

Brian, is Barry Green’s test on-line somewhere? I’m interested in using the HVX for a project and my intended work flow is to shoot and edit 720P/24 with immediate distribution as an SD broadcast. (I wanted to have the HD archived for future distribution) I’m concerned about the quality of the SD downconversion, this won’t be a big budget project.
Any comments from the field?

I’d like to ask if it would be better to edit your show in HD (lay in graphics, lower thirds, etc) and then convert to SD? You would then archive the HD show master to hard drive along with the project file and master the SD show to tape.
What is the best approach quality-wise and from an editor efficiency/effectiveness standpoint?

I teach at a community college and an exercise I sometimes do is place several objects on a table. The objects are at various distances from where the camera will be and arranged to allow two-shots, three-shots, etc.
I then have two cameras set at two distances from the table. The students go between the two cameras, practice focusing in on the items and seeing how distance from subject can affect depth-of-field.
