July 18, 2014 at 4:43 pm in reply to: Day rates. How do they work?

As someone who’s just getting started in the industry, it’s really helpful for me to get a lot of different perspectives on how things work, (although I could do without so much of this bickering).

I work in a small city as a one-man operation. I handle the clients, shoot, edit, and deliver. For me, an hourly rate has worked out pretty well. Sometimes clients want a lot of small changes, and as they add changes, your hourly rate keeps them valuing your time. And some edits or revisions only take me 3 minutes to complete.

I also saw the question asked: “If something takes me 4 hours to complete that would have taken someone else 8, then is it okay to charge a full day rate?” To me, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal if you and your client are both on the same page as to how your billing system works. I don’t think there’s any degree of “dishonesty” there. However, I think I would just prefer to increase my rates as I get faster and better, so that at some point my half-day rate is the same as the other guy’s full-day rate, and they’ll know that I’m worth it.

Thanks everyone for all the thoughts.

  • Thank you all for your help.

Between Nesting and Project Managing, I think I was able to save myself a great deal of time and headaches.

Once again, I’m reminded why the Creative Cow community is the best.

    Cheers!

Just curious, are you using a pirated version of Motion on the problem computer?

I suppose you probably have your issue resolved by now, but for future people seeking help with this:

I’ve found the E1 plugin to be extremely finicky. If you L&T’d your footage using one version of the plug-in, FCP won’t be able to recognize it if you try to relink it after updating the plugin.

You can download both versions of the plugin directly from Canon:
    Version 1.1 : https://software.canon-europe.com/software/0039308.asp
    Version 1.2 : https://support-th.canon-asia.com/contents/TH/EN/0200136502.html

In order to remove the plugin from your system to install the other one, you have to quit FCP, then you can find the plugin folder at:

    /Library/Application Support/ProApps/MIO/RAD/Plugins

Just delete the CanonE1.RADPlug file and empty your trash. Install the version you need, reboot final cut, and you should be good.

    Thanks for your response.

Do you really think I’m better off starting from scratch? I have over an hour of edited footage by now…

And I’m editing both on a MacBook Pro and an iMac. I edit on my MacBook Pro when I don’t have access to my friend’s iMac, and they both seem to crash rather frequently on me when I try to mount my reels in L&T.

I have 50 reels, and to my understanding, all of them will need to be mounted in order to Batch Capture my project into ProRes. If the E1 plug-in keeps crashing final cut when I try to mount them, I don’t know what I’m going to do.

    I’m using a G-SAFE 2TB drive.

I originally wanted to edit in ProRes, but we didn’t have enough hard drive space to accommodate that, so we decided to edit in Proxy, and then upres to ProRes once we locked picture. Lock picture is approaching rapidly, and I want to make sure that that process is as painless as possible.

    Thanks again for your help.
