What dimensions did you scale it to? Fcp struggles to handle any images that are large in dimension like 2500×2000 for instance. Resize an image in PS so that there are no number values above 1900 or so and it’ll render fine. You can keep it jpg.

You should really avoid any h264 editing at all in FCP. If I were you I would immediately start a batch transcode in Compressor to convert all h.264 files into prores 422 or prores LT (if drive space is a concern).
If you set Compressor to keep the original file name (“MVI_1234.mov” instead of “MVI_1234-ProRes422.mov”) then you can reconnect all files no problem. Then just change the sequence settings in FCP to ProRes.

Niall, no need to re-edit, just deliver SD since everything is SD.
Create a new sequence in FC, drop one of your 2997 stock footage clips into the timeline and say yes to match settings. Delete that clip from the timeline.
Copy everything from your current “HD 23.98” sequence and paste it into your new SD sequence.
Select everything in your new SD sequence and right click>remove attributes>position and distort. Everything should look good and you shouldn’t have to render anything (unless you have effects).

Now just export that straight as is, SD 2997. An HD 23.98 delivery will a nightmare with QC.

There might be a better way than this, but you could drop the A cam into a new sequence video only with the external audio, sync and link them, then drag that new clip from sequence into a bin to create the new master A cam clip. Then multiclip your new A cam with B & C. When you’re editing you cut “video only” and leave the audio set to cam A.
Not as easy as automatic but not too bad if you don’t have many clips.

  • Anytime you shoot anything on that camera and want to edit in fcp7, always first bring it ALL into compressor and create all new ProRes422 (or ProRes LT) clips. No quality loss. Edit in that (frame size and frame rate will stay the same thru compressor). When finished, export a “quicktime movie” which is full res. Now use that full res video to create whatever other formats you want with compressor, like h264 for web.

You said you’ve created a full res clip already? Just use that to create an h.264 out of compressor w/tc burn. Don’t try to compress an h264 from an unrendered fcp sequence if you don’t have to.
Also make sure your clips and sequence setting match. If not the render will take longer.

I’m looking forward to hearing about a feature length workflow in X, maybe sort of like we did with Walter Murch on Cold Mountain, although I think it’s realistically a 10.2 or 3 update.
In March I’m editing my final feature narrative done in FCP7. Moving to Pr and some X after that, but I’m definitely intrigued by some of the features in X as they would apply to a long from narrative. Organization and media management is solid and I love the idea of audition for quickly replacing out takes.
