January 11, 2017 at 12:22 pm in reply to: Luminance Levels Failed Harding Test

The Harding Test is for flashing (i.e. abrupt, rapid, significant luminance changes) not for peak luminance.

You need to look at your graphics and reduce the amount of flashing in order to pass the test. Usually you will be given a log of precisely where the issues occur.

January 10, 2017 at 4:28 pm in reply to: Qualifier chatter: a possible fix

I have to say that I am not convinced this is a solution.

Unless I have misunderstood, you seem to be simply trying to cover up the noise (“chatter”) by crushing the key and then applying prodigious amounts of blur.

Have you had good results with this method? Does the resulting key look completely clean?

I would have thought all you are doing is spreading the noise out over a larger area and not removing it.

It’s not really possible to remove temporal noise (which is what you are calling “chatter”) by means of a spatial blurring method. Temporal noise needs to be addressed with temporal noise reduction – probably the best reason to splash out on the Studio version of Resolve.

In addition, I tend to think that very blurred keys look pretty unconvincing as a general rule, not to mention that crushing the key results in removing the detail of the grey values which you would normally want to strive to keep.

But as I say, I may have misunderstood you. I’d be interested to hear more.

January 10, 2017 at 2:18 pm in reply to: Putting a video in your text

Just thought of an easy way of doing it in Resolve.

Create your text and then create a black background using the Solid Color generator.

Put this background below your text and create a compound clip of the two and place it above your video fill.

Now set the Blend Mode of the Compound Clip to Darken, and you will see the video fill through the text with black all around it.

It’s a real fiddle in Resolve, but easy as anything in Fusion.

In Resolve, select your video fill and create a New Fusion Connect clip and open that in Fusion.

Merge your video over a background – you don’t specify what you want it to be, so I am going to assume this is a black background generator. (BTW, make sure it is the same frame size as your footage.)

Create your text (or import it if you have made it elsewhere) and use it as the Effect Mask input to the Merge. (If you are using imported text it will need an alpha channel, but if it’s just black and white, you can set the Effect Mask Channel to Luminance.)

Render out the result using the Fusion Clip node that has been automatically created.

    Done.

Your matted footage will now populate your Resolve timeline.

[Joseph Owens] “I’ve been arguing against this loose abuse of the word “democratization” since the first time I heard it applied to this kind of situation.”

I think both you and Marc have me down as a champion of this.

    I am not!

[Andrew Kimery] “If we reach a point in the US where data caps don’t exist and 1gig up/down is common place (or even 10gig up/down is affordable) then these problems obviously are reduced. “

    Good grief!

I thought things were bad in the UK, but if you’re having issues with tiny file sizes like that you really do have problems.

Whereas in the rest of Europe, let alone Japan …!

It’s called “democratisation of the tools of production”.

There are some zealots who think it’s a fantastic idea.

    And then there’s the reality.

OK, Presley, I’m sure you’re feeling that Joseph is being mean here, but he really, really isn’t.

All of his advice there is absolutely spot on.

I would very much second his suggestion that you don’t go with Resolve for this.

Premiere or FCP X are a much more suitable choice that will make your life infinitely easier, not least because you can comfortably edit long GOP media natively.

We’re not trying to be unhelpful, but really Resolve isn’t the answer to your problems here.

  • I only used the expression “paint stroke” because that was what Tangier used. I assumed he wasn’t foolish enough to be actually using paint strokes, which are of course super-inefficient and very poorly suited to this process..

January 5, 2017 at 8:45 am in reply to: Shapes suddenly missing

If you go to your Applications folder, locate the Motion application, right-click and select “Show Package Contents” and go to Contents/Library Content/Shapes, that’s where the Shapes live.

Shape Styles, which is what you seem to be referring to, lives in the Shape Style folder in the same place: Contents/Library Content/Shape Styles.

Not knowing what you’ve done to lose them, it’s hard to know what to suggest. Often the simplest thing is just to go ahead and reinstall the application.
