April 4, 2017 at 11:06 am in reply to: Fusion Connect 101: compressed codecs do not work in Fusion??? Resolve timeline 29.97 fps rendered as Fusion Connect at 24 pfs ???[Michael McCune] “Question: do any compressed codecs import into Fusion, in your experience???”
I’m on a Mac and I frequently use Apple ProRes successfully with Fusion Connect. I haven’t had any success with DNxHD however.
Have you tried not creating new media but simply selecting “Use source media” when creating your Fusion Connect clip? Usually there is no good reason to make new media.
As far as performance is concerned, as you know, it’s virtually impossible to make this sort of comparison as there are so many variables in play.
Could you describe exactly what you are doing? Maybe there are workflow optimisations that would help.

Resolve timeline 29.97 fps rendered as Fusion Connect at 24 pfs ???[Michael McCune] “But the fps for the compressed codecs may not matter, as we see that this anomaly is seen in the failed compressed codecs only, not the successful frame based codecs.”
Not sure what anomaly you’re talking about there.
As for your codec problem, I’m not the right person to ask as I don’t have access to Fusion/Resolve on a PC right now.
Does DNxHD work for you in Resolve?
For working in Fusion, you ideally want to steer clear of compressed codecs unless you’re not that concerned about quality.

Are you on a Mac or a PC?
As to frame rate, when using Fusion Connect the frame rate is fixed by whatever you send from Resolve.
This is different to the usual behaviour of Fusion were you can change the frame rate of the rendered output using the Saver. However, if you are using an image sequence for your output, a frame will always be a frame.

Indeed, your answer was correct in terms of the question. I was just pointing out that it was not correct in the sense that you spoke about “style” properties in general terms and didn’t limit it to font style.

April 3, 2017 at 10:19 am in reply to: How can I use multiple styles of text in one line/text box in Motion?[Robin S. Kurz] “Even with AE there is no way of forcing that e.g. the first word in a single text box is style X and the next word style Y without in fact creating a separate text box for each.”
While this is true for changing the font, it’s not true for other style properties such as Fill Color, Stroke Color, Stroke Width, Character Offset, etc.
All of these style properties can be controlled on a per line, per word or per character basis using a simple expression. Add the Animate Text option for the parameter that you want to control, add an expression control to that and then add this expression to the Amount value:
textIndex%2 ? 0 : 100Depending on the “Based On” choice you make, that will alternate the style of each character, word or line, or to change the style of every third line use this:
textIndex%3 ? 0 : 100And so on.

[Jeff Markgraf] “Alas, I fear that as long as verbosity and tortured allegory are made to stand in for wit and rhetorical rigor, the sigh, the eye roll, and their several unwashed and vulgar cousins will continue to plague us.”
You see?
Now we’re cooking!
(Though I’m not sure that you have entirely grasped what an allegory is.)

Glad to hear that worked for you and thanks for the kind words about the tutorials – if you have ideas for areas you would like to see me covered please let me know.
As for the Connect workflow, it’s not yet ideal, but obviously it’s early days and I suspect that BM may look to improve on it soon.
The method I use is simply to duplicate the clip that I want to send to Fusion so I have two instances stacked on the timeline. If I’ve already graded the clip I am sending, I either bake the grade in or bypass it depending on what I am doing with it in Fusion – usually I’ll want to be using the ungraded clip. Then when I come back from Fusion I simply copy the grade to the Fusion Connect clip from my duplicate.
If I need to rework the Fusion Comp from scratch, I’ll send a new version of my original clip to Fusion using “Create New Version”, open up the previous Connect comp and copy and paste everything except the Loader and Saver and paste them into the new Connect comp attaching the Loader and Saver as appropriate. You can make this easier if you make a Group of your comp – you can then Ungroup it once you connected the flow back together in the new comp.
Or you can choose “Save Version’ when in Fusion which will automatically increment the version number, but you do need to make sure to rename the Saver to a new version number.
Obviously if you’re simply wanting to make changes to the original Fusion Connect comp you just need to select the Connect clip and use “Open in Fusion” and then you can use the versioning menu to select which render you want to use.

The roles of Quixote and Sancho Panza have already been taken.
So that means you’ll have to settle for being Rocinante.
