Comments and Things Worth Noting

Today, almost anybody can make a film. But just making one does not make it good.

In the kingdom of bald men the one haired man is king.

So what is this hair?

Stories run back through the history of humanity to before writing, right back to the first campfires and long before memory. They were what to do in the evening while everyone picked bits of mammoth from between their teeth.

Stories have many forms and purposes. From the songline maps of Native Australians, through stories about how things generally work in nature, they range to the entertainment with which we most commonly associate them today. They are an engaging and ingenuous way of passing on knowledge and allow the listener to rehearse their own response to a challenge.

They make an argument for a solution to a problem. That problem is what lies under the cloud of symptoms that we feel in the circumstances addressed by the story. It's a contemporary marketing mantra that we never argue with our own data. A good story will reveal the author's credentials by playing back the little aches and pains that the audience knows so well. It is this that engages their attention because stories should always be about the audience.

Stories lie at the heart of many media. Poems, novels, paintings, plays, mime, comics, songs and films… all ways of realising a story.

Films are a lot more than filming something, they are greater than the sum of camera and edit software. At best they are immersive and engaging experiences whose emotional and logical congruence provoke a deep identification in an audience. This enables complicity with the author's intent so that the audience no longer asks '…ah but what about…?'. And you know that it has worked.

Film stories engage audiences repeatably and reliably. We tell engaging stories economically. Who are we? We are production and post production professionals trained and experienced in broadcast TV and the film industry.
