July 21, 2010 at 7:37 am in reply to: Enhancebox plus atto r380?

    Richard,
Our Enhance with R380 are still running fine since install about 3 years ago.
We only run Hitachi ultrastars now after a seagate issue.

I’ve had a few issues with the R380 that both Bob and Atto helped with.

What you get by buying from one of the companies MAXX, Dulce,Cadigit etc is support.

Are you good enough to trouble shoot yourself?
If something breaks can you afford to just go out and replace the part?

If you save yourself money by building it on your own and installing do yourself a massive favour and build 2, run the 2nd on another computer and have it clone over every hour.

I think Bobs suggesting clicking on the links for storage on here, looking at the websites, contacting them then making an informed decision rather than just using a pin. Besides I don’t think ya monitor would thank you 😉

So to answer your initial questions. yes.. those products work together.

But.. which exact model drives will you use?
What computer are you plugging it into ?
Which version of the OS ?
What other cards will you have ?
Which slots will you put them in?
And what if you set it all up and you just get 200MBs ? then what?

There are pro’s n cons to doing it either way. it’s your call but personally right now were not buying more storage for a while till 6Gig comes out.

June 21, 2010 at 8:25 pm in reply to: London Roadshow

Well hopefully there will be a autodesk like util app to turn on and off.. though to be honest the app could just run it on launch and exit no ?

Anyways I attended the London show. Overall very impressed. Ui was pretty clear.
    Tracker was awesome.. love it!
For the price of the OSX version if you already have a highend macpro for work it’s kinda a no brainer.

I’ll take something stable with decent conform over Color any day.

I agree with the comment above about the unnecessary steps it appeared to take to do masks/windows etc..

Also seems there always ended up being a reach for the mouse action, which is fine.. but going of the size of panels seems a tad uncomfortable to me.

Seems I could add a secondary / activate / vig / circle /adjust in about 10>12 seconds on a panel.
I could do that in 5 in color using a tablet.

The inside/outside I’m fine with though.. i always forget to switch in colour.

I know some would prefer just a mouse and have nothing in the hand but I’m sticking by my guns and would deffo prefer a tablet infront of the balls.

the 4 ball system with ball 4 as a mouse etc is nice though..

The panel though.. lights.. any RGB colour you want.. better than frikin lazer beams!!

Personally I’d like a panel with less buttons and a better consolidated ui using the ones gone from a panel.

The Linux machine was fast.. very fast.

I need to have a much harder look at what it can and can’t do, but overall.. they have a great product that can make you money, turn jobs around quickly and will only get better.

Try DPX and see what happens.

Nuke reading 20 files.. what compression is on the Tiffs?

Your raid may say 20MB’s , but thats probably all Nuke can/needs to pull… as its loading 20 tiffs.

Probably exactly the same reason I’m running Smoke OSX demo on a 27″ i7 .. to learn and get used to it without taking up another macpro at work.

    And yes Smoke runs fine..

Resolve is probably more reliant on Cuda though. Suppose we’ll see in time.

So yes… there is a point to the question.

But aren’t you limited in the bandwidth the expander card goes into ?

Would be interesting to see if a pcie expander may do the trick. Suppose it depends on the x lanes are poss.

Possible option could be pcie card > 16bay external raid with 3 more pcie slots internally.

This would give you 24bay DAS plus 7 more slots

not sure on the speed split between them though :-/

many options.. only gonna get better 🙂

I suspect the main is used as the GPU and the UI is run off the 2nd

all our macpro’s currently run 8800’s so am looking what comes out top for Resolve also plus if the 8800 is useful as the 2nd or not.

Please let us know your findings Jamie.
