As JP has said a gradient is essential to stop eye strain, my background is concave and I get a very nice gradual fall off towards the middle.

I have been involved in the design of several big iron suites, TBH anything that is completely colour neutral is fine. It could be a regular plain white from your local hardware store. At the moment I have a matt white concave background. The wall behind is painted grey. As everyone’s eyes are different find a background that works for you. You don’t have to slavishly use N5 Munsell etc. Just make sure your lights are the correct temp ie 6500k and as long as the background is properly neutral you will be fine.

The only reason I would pre-order is if there is a long lead time on the Resolve panel. Software is very easy to produce in bulk. I don’t think Blackmagic will be running out of DVDs somehow.

I would suggest you wait until it is shipping before you part with any of your hard earned.

FWIW I will be switching as soon as they start shipping. I have been working on Color for a year now, after having worked on Pogle, 2k etc. Color has some great features but I keep on coming up against the fact that it is not real time and it doesn’t have sound, these two factors have lost us clients… eg BBC client a few months ago,
“Oh Color, that’s the one with no audio right ? We had to re-do half a days grade because the director couldn’t attend and the colourist didn’t know that two scenes were day for evening because he couldn’t hear the VO….” This is just one of many examples others include “why is it jerky” “Oh it’s not real time” etc etc. When people are paying upwards of £250 per hour they want to see exactly how their film/promo will look, hopefully Resolve will allow that.
