[Danny Bourque] ” However, I’m getting a sense that people’s workflows apparently include capturing the P2 card file architecture and just letting Premiere make sense of the footage from there.”

Yes, this is the way many Premiere Pro users work with P2. For a lot of us, it’s just faster to work with native file formats.

[Danny Bourque] ” But this method doesn’t let me rename any of the files, even within Premiere.”

You can rename files in Premiere, just click on the filename in the project panel and type a new name. Of course, this filename only shows up in Premiere and AE (if you send the clip to AE via Dynamic Link). Otherwise, the original filenames go untouched.

[Ed Mohar] “I hadn’t tried exporting directly to a card. I had exported to a folder, and loaded the folder as a virtual volume in panadonics P2 Viewer utility and it didn’t identify any clips.”

Odd, I haven’t tried using P2 viewer to browse exported P2 folders… can you play the clips directly in Windows Explorer or the Mac Finder?

Do you have a P2 camera or card reader? I’ve written directly from Premiere to a P2 card via 32bit PCMCIA card reader before. The video worked on the camera and that footage worked on another system, so I’m pretty sure the workflow is solid.

[Shane Ross]“Adobe Premiere does this? Exports to a P2 volume structure?”

Yes, it will also output MXF 0P1a in XDCAM, IMX and DV25.

I should also add that, in comparing AE to Motion one could say that Motion (while good and capable) isn’t used in high end postproduction. The same can’t be said of AE when comparing it to Shake.

    [Thomas Frank] “You can’t??”

See the comparison of Motion to AE vs AE to Shake? Truthfully, no. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Shake designed to be a dedicated paint and 2D compositing tool? AE on the other hand, is much more of a general purpose compositing, paint and animation package. I realize that Shake is a more precise tool for compositing and painting… but you have to ignore everything else AE has or can do (like the Puppet Tool and 3D tracking) to make the argument that it’s less sophisticated than Shake… am I missing something?

[Scott Sheriff] ” I could make the same comparison of Shake vs AE.”

Can you clarify, Scott? I don’t see the comparison.

    Thanks,

Crazy!! I wonder what professional previz artists think about this. For low budget and microfilmmakers, this could be huge.

    Thanks for posting, Andy.

[Chris Harlan] “I hope that “Rethought. Reshaped. Recreated. – Reinvented for the Mac ” simply means ported.”

I hope so too. I keep telling people that I’m going to get a Mac one day… as soon as I find an application that I would be foolish not to have. I had hoped it would be an updated Shake, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. But if it turns out to be Smoke (or something like it), it would be nice to have something like SF, Acid or Vegas also waiting for me (on the Mac).

That’s good news. It would be interesting to see how Sound Forge and Vegas would be recieved by the Apple user base. I think Sony makes great software, and I would love to see them expand their reach to more platforms… assuming this announcement has anything to do with Sony. 🙂

[tony west] “When you say right now you are already done. These people don’t think about right now.

They think about 10 years down the line.”

Aren’t we talking about buying devices for right now, though? Why invest in technology that may or may not be useful in the future, aren’t you just guaranteeing that you’ll have a painfully outdated device by the time your hoped-for technology even becomes relevant?

At some point, I’m sure 4k videos will be the norm in home entertainment… question is, will I want to play them on a four year old device that cost twice as much as the ‘current’ technology?
