[Jeremy Garchow] “But what I was trying to point out is the when people say the get a “way cheaper” PC, it’s in the i7 range which is why I started to look comparatively.”

I see, I must have missed that. No argument here. I think the only way you will get a much cheaper i7 PC with high quality components, is if you build it yourself. Not a big deal if you’ve done it before, but I can see why others might not want to go through the trouble.

[Jeremy Garchow] “What I have learned today is that the amount of money that I would save getting a PC isn’t going to allow me to retire early.”

    No, defintely not. 🙂

[Jeremy Garchow] “It’s fine if someone wants to build their own, I’m just trying to really see what’s gong on out there. I do not find pcs to be significantly cheaper but perhaps I’m looking at it incorrectly.”

I think you’re right, Jeremy. The price difference between comparable Macs and PC’s in that all-in-one form factor isn’t that great. I think where you’ll see HP, Dell and others edging out the Mac in price/performance, is in Xeon based workstations. And that’s only because of the availability of newer processors and a wider range of graphics cards. But that’s just for now, we’ll see what happens later in the year with the new MacPro.

[Jeremy Garchow] “Can someone else run a real world cost analysis and show me something that is much cheaper? I am truly wondering if this is adding to the Legend. It grows greater every day.”

Did you look for any other vendors? HP is probably the biggest and best SI on the Windows side, but they’re not the only one. Try Dell, Promax, BoldData Systems or Puget Systems.

Why do you say that, have you read the article?

[Ned Miller] “Yes perhaps you’re right. Every time I see a twenty-something on my crew or in public they seem to have a Mac.”

I think that’s fair. It seems to be a matter of the circles you run in. I’m mostly exposed to technologists (IT professionals and software developers) and VFX/mograph artists, so I see a lot of diversity (OS wise).

[Ned Miller] “• All young people, 100%, feel more comfortable in the Apple Universe. Probably because of their iPhone?”

Not sure about this one. I think you may be leaving out a very large chunk of kids who are using Linux, Android and Windows for hacking, gaming, and creative pursuits. Drop in on nearly any 3D art forum, and you might find a world less oriented to Apple. 🙂

[Jeremy Garchow] “[Shawn Miller] “Seems like it would be nice to have both. :-)”

    *shakes fist* Both? Ha!”

LOL – sorry man, I obviously need to pick. 🙂

[Jeremy Garchow] “In X, you can at least SEE what the filters are doing to the audio.”

And that’s a good thing. It’s one of the features I miss about Vegas.

[Jeremy Garchow] “If you are having DC Offset issues in 7, how do you know when it’s fixed? Guess and render send it to an updatable waveform that will redraw the proper fix?”

Possibly, I’ve never used FCP. Though this is very easy to fix in PPro and Audition… but it would be nice to be able to do right on the PPro timeline (like FCPX).

[Jeremy Garchow] “Sorry guys, audio in FCPX is better even with worse waveforms.”

I’ll take your word for it. 🙂

[Jeremy Garchow] “I would rather have the better tools than the better waveforms.”

Seems like it would be nice to have both. 🙂 I’m with Chris here, it’s nice to know when you’re having DC offset issues.

[Aindreas Gallagher] “…but as far as I’m aware, no other editing system on the planet has these kinds of live audio mastering abilities in the timeline.”

Sony Vegas does… and has had these kinds of capabilities for years. I’ve known people who have recorded and mixed entire albums with it.

November 27, 2012 at 7:15 pm in reply to: Apple “decimates” Pro Audio team!

[Chris Harlan] “[Walter Soyka] “In my effects-drive corner of the world, decimate means remove extraneous (usually duplicate) frames from a sequence at a regular interval — far closer to the Roman meaning than the modern one. People look at you funny when you suggest decimating footage. Maybe that’s because no one shoots on anything measured in feet anymore…”

I had no idea! That’s so cool.”

It’s true, it’s also a fairly common expression in 3D modeling. Sometimes, you have to decimate polygons and vertices from high-poly models (usually a hero) so you can make low-poly copies for game engines or crowd scenes (using particle/replication systems). 🙂
