[Bret Williams] “Nothing labeled position or X or Y! Oh, wait, there’s “PAN” and “TILT.” WTF? We can’t all agree on x and y position? There’s not even a virtual camera involved and they gotta call it pan and tilt, which is of course completely inaccurate in a 2D world anyway. Might as well call it scroll and crawl.”

lol – okay, I thought I was the only one bothered by that… technically, they should call it dolly(L/R) and crane(up/down), if they want to use the nomenclature of camera movement… but I agree, it makes a LOT more sense to use 2D coordinates than virtual camera moves (and the wrong ones at that).

lol – yes, my mother used to say that too. I’m bucking for Steve Connor’s former title of “Class Bully”… I mean, since he’s not using it anymore. 🙂

[Jeremy Garchow] “[Shawn Miller] “You guys are giving me flashbacks of that show “Life”! :-)”

I have never heard of this show. I watched an episode on Netflix. I will admit, I might watch another.

    Jeremy”

It’s a fun show. The setup is a bit slow IMO, but I think it starts to pay off near the middle of the first season. I have a bit of an off-beat sense of humor, so this show really appealed to me. I hope you find it entertaining as well. 🙂

[Aindreas Gallagher] “hey totally – I was mad for flint particles in the day, those things were incredible as realtime. Squirting a rainbow through and hitting them with force objects and stuff.

and I did go fairly mad for 3DS max until I realised I should have learnt cinema 4D and I basically went off in a huff. annnd that was around ten years ago.”

Yeah, things were definitely more complicated then… you might not even believe how much easier and faster these applications have gotten. Would the higher billable rates be enough to entice you into trying again? A friend of mine just got paid 2k US to make a 30 second video of spinning logos (I think it took an hour to make)… just sayin’. 🙂

I third this plug, these are really good tutorials! 🙂

[Aindreas Gallagher] “[Shawn Miller] “You need a supported 3D application to run it.”

you had me excited until I read that.”

Understandable, 3D “stuff” can seem pretty daunting at first. But from a purely motion graphics point of view, it’s not so bad. Depending on how deep you want to get, the basics of 3D animation are about the same as AE or Motion; set keyframes along a timeline, use tweening to refine (talking about animated text and graphics here). You might even find some things a lot faster and easier to do in 3D. The combination of X-Particles and Particular can be incredibly powerful, you just have to pay the 3D tax to get there. Well worth a try IMO. 🙂

[David Mathis] “…Trapcode Particular, which, in my honest opinion, is the best particle emitter out there.”

Have your tried X-Particles? You need a supported 3D application to run it. But in terms of speed, power and flexibility, it runs circles around Particular. Not to say that you should jettison Particular, but the combination has the potential to REALLY elevate your work.

[Dennis Radeke] “”What would you like me to add?””

Integration with the CC applications, please. Making animated menus in AE used to be pretty sweet… would love to have C4D in the mix. 🙂

[tony west] “Hi Shawn, this a little bit different from what I was talking with Mark about. I was referring to corporate video production when in years past they would ask for a DVD to show employees and now they ask you to just put it up on youtube or their own site.”

Hi Tony, fair enough. Apologies for straying so far from your point. I will agree that DVD handoff is rare for me as well (in my work life), 10 years ago, 50% of my deliverables were via disc, now it’s more like 5%. In my indie film life though, many festivals still require discs, but nearly everyone who wants a copy of my projects want an authored Blu-ray or DVD.

    [tony west] ”
As far as people buying movie DVD’s, yeah people will be doing that for a while I’m sure we all agree, but even with that I don’t see people in the airport with portable dvd players as much as I see them watching movies on their iPads. Maybe that’s just what I’m seeing.”

Yes, totally agree. Video on the go has really taken off. Not many folks on portable disc players in the airport (though you can rent them), but I think we’ll see disks in the living room and the car seat for sometime.
