[Ricardo Marty] “When I asked whether Fusion was end of life as a standalone product, Blackmagic USA President Dan May clarified. Resolve 15 will not include the entire feature set of Fusion. Rather, as Dan put it, Fusion will contain a superset of Resolve 15 Fusion functionality. Fusion, then, will continue as a standalone product both in its paid and free versions. Note, though, that beginning with Resolve 15, a Fusion dongle will also unlock Blackmagic Studio giving those users who purchased Fusion an extra Resolve seat.”

That is good news then, thanks for sharing.

[Simon Ubsdell] “One rather telling thing is that Primatte is no longer in the toolset apparently because of licensing issues. Is that a clue? I do rather get the feeling that the standalone application is now suddenly history.”

Well… that is troubling! Note to self, “do not lose Fusion dongle”.

[Simon Ubsdell] “The biggest problem with this development is that BM seriously messed up the way they announced it. Not mentioning classic Fusion at all was a huge mistake. Assuming it will still exist outside Resolve, they should have talked about the number of new users who would see the benefits of Fusion and then want to try the “full” Fusion as well as the advantage to third party developers who would have a larger customer base of Resolve users to sell their add-ons to.”

That does give me a slight sinking feeling. ☺ OTOH, BMD does listen… you might have to scream at them for a year or two, but they do listen. ☺ I just hope we’re not walking into an Apple/Autodesk style public execution of a powerful node based compositing application. I don’t think BMD will do that… but stranger things have happened.

[Simon Ubsdell] “I have to say I’m surprised at how BMD have handled this. But then major change is always a tricky sell.”

    True enough!

[Tangier Clarke] “I really loved the specs for the pocket cinema camera 4K, except for one thing. I searched high and low online hoping to find that the screen came out and articulated/rotated like on the GH5. May sound crazy but it’s a huge help having something like that when trying to get certain angled shots while maintaining a visual of the screen.”

I think they want you to buy the Blackmagic Video Assist… which, for $495 USD still brings the package in around $2,000 (including taxes). Not bad for a 10/12bit camera + recorder/monitor.

Again: Resolve is great. Fusion in Resolve is fantastic.
But having a standalone Fusion for the pure vfx work is an absolute must.”

I agree with this. I had a chance to play with Resolve 15 last night, and I have to say that I’m quite impressed so far. I like the way Fusion has been integrated and I could see myself going to Resolve/Fusion much more often for keying interviews and lighter projects. What I’m much more skeptical about is using the same workflow when heavier composites, VFX and animation are involved… I think I would prefer a dedicated Fusion in those cases.

[Simon Ubsdell] “And on the other hand decidedly unhappy that Fusion as a tool for VFX professionals in its own right might be disappearing.”

Good point – I hope that dedicated VFX artists don’t abandon the application to avoid the rest of the Resolve package. I like the look of the integrated UI, but as a rule generally prefer standalone software as well. Fingers crossed for something that makes most users happy! Or at least, the ability to run any of the applications in a standalone mode.

These announcements are just crazy. I love BMD’s vision and commitment to small and independent producers. They really just seem to (honestly) want to empower creative people with powerful and inexpensive tools. I can’t wait to dig into the Resolve/Fusion workflow. I was skeptical about the Fusion panel… but the demo makes me feel like they may have gotten the integration piece right. I’m curious to see if BMD’s approach will make Fusion more appealing to the average editor.

[Dominic Deacon] ” I just exported a single frame from 3ds and it took my system 26 hours to complete the job during which time the entire computer was out of action. “

Just out of curiosity, which renderer were you using and what caused such a long render?

[Michael Gissing] “ProResRAW as a camera format is very exciting. The data rate looks to be a bit under ProRes422HQ which means you can get slightly more on your cards but with RAW you can dig into the data and change things like ISO and color balance in post, get the full dynamic range unlike ProRes422HQ which is 10 bit.

This must be a camera originating format only so the other flavors of ProRes for finishing codecs remain important. It looks like the data compression may be higher than the current 4:1 cDNG that the Blackmagic cameras now shoot so if BM adopt this format, it will be very useful. If however it only works on a Mac with FCPX installed then I hope the industry avoid it as proprietary codecs are such a pain. Maybe we will see a DNxRAW next.”

After using Cineform RAW, I wondered for years why Apple and AVID didn’t develop raw versions of their codecs… it seemed like a no brainer, especially as camera capture formats. ProRes RAW sounds exciting, but I wouldn’t buy a camera or recorder that used it as the only means of raw video capture… I just don’t trust Apple to support it on Windows in the long run.

  • [Jasford Muldoon] ” For me personally I do it as there is so much creative freedom with what you can do to game footage and I find it a hell of a lot cooler than editing and compositing footage from real life, thats all there is to it really ????”

Interesting, I’ve been wondering about that too. I can certainly see the appeal of working with footage that already looks good. I will say though… you can learn a lot more from working with live action footage, especially if you shoot it yourself. ☺

[Warren Eig] ” I once went for an interview and asked the producer ‘what especially did you like about my work?’ The response: ‘I haven’t seen your work yet. What’s your rate?'”

    ACK!!!
