Great! I’m really getting somewhere now. My hard drive is going to be very happy by the end of today.

Could you please also answer my other question above about deleting the media?

    Thanks heaps

    Thanks for your prompt reply.

I’ve given it a test but the problem is, it’s not allowing me to keep the empty clips.
My aim is to finish with a project in which the unused clips still appear in the browser but with media offline. This would enable me to go back and batch digitise those unused clips if I need to make a different version of the video in the future.

Perhaps media manager is not the best tool for what I am trying to do. Is there a way to show or select all unused clips in a project? And if so, once I have selected all the unused clips, can I delete the media from those within FCP?

I have another question regarding what you said about going back and deleting the original media. When I delete a project, do I have to go into my Capture Scratch and Render folders and delete the appropriate folders? Would I need to delete anything in the other folders such as waveform cache?

    Cheers,

September 6, 2010 at 7:21 am in reply to: Why is it so hard to make a DVD?

A few people have said that the presets are best for longer projects where you can save space on the disc using a lower bit rate. My projects rarely go over 10 min and I’d like the quality to be as high as possible.
Or, is there a better preset I’ve missed? I’m using Best Quality 90 min.

What bit rate would you recommend?
(I took that bit rate from a tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFgJpd7DEWw 3.5 min in)

The deinterlacing is a whole other issue – I’ll discuss that in another blog to save confusion.

    Thanks for your help

August 19, 2010 at 8:53 am in reply to: Ergonomics + shoulder pain

I can relate, I’ve just taken a couple of Ibuprofens because my left shoulder was aching despite it just sitting on the desk. Mine is slightly different, up in the trapezoid but I think it relates to an old shoulder injury (which by the way was caused by repetitive lifting of an SP Betacam!).

If my chair is too high and I have to hold my arms up rather than resting them on the desk I also get a sharp pan right in the pointiest bone at the back of my neck. That’s a nasty one.

Complaint number three is “mouse cramp” in the right hand. I guess I should try a pen and tablet – can anyone tell me if it’s any better? I worry it might be worse.

My Doctor says Ibuprofen can make you bleed to death so don’t follow my example!
My physio tells me to stretch and walk regularly, much better advice. That’s what long renders are for!

Hi Michael, I’ve just been exporting as quicktime, not changing any settings and dropping straight into idvd and it’s been working ok.
Will I see a better result if I use the compressor method you described? My settings are the same as Kelly’s.

A 5 min sample of the asf video files were already supplied. I don’t have any stills. The asf files have imported into FCP no problem and I have already run a test on a 5 min clip. That’s what I based my calculation on.
I’m just wondering if I am going to run into dramas when the client supplies the full 168 hrs x3 (86 GIG).

June 15, 2010 at 8:30 am in reply to: Reinstall

I followed everyones advice. I have a clone of the whole system, plus I used Preference Manager which is a great little piece of software. But, in the end, Paranoia got the better of me and I decided NOT to do a full reinstall. Too many things that might go wrong, too much software to reinstall, plus the half day it will take to copy back all the media.
My problem was that the system was freezing every time it went to sleep. In the end we decided it was better to treat the symptom than to treat the disease, I have told my system never to go to sleep. Problem solved – kinda.
Maybe one day an upgrade will fix the problem. Anyone else know of this problem or a cure?

    Thanks for the help!

Sorry to be so slow in responding.

Yes I saw the earlier thread and was a bit confused since AJA never asks for a log in. I have only one user for my system with admin privelages so it didn’t seem right.

Anyway, I tried the upgrade and the problem is solved.
    Thanks anyway!
