I like the shure se535 great for monitoring very neutral but seriously uncomfortable so I recently scrapped and like for earbuds anyway the klipsch x10, very comfy great sound, expensive but warrantied for 2 years.

If you decide larger cans are the way to go, I’d go Sony 7509HD over the industry standard 7506, the 7506 are dodgy for all ears, with extended use you’ll forever have itchy ears, I had for years, so does everyone I know that uses the 7506, they’re a bad design, great sound sure but they create a sauna in ears, the 7509 which so far failed to launch are amazing, much more comfortable and your ears can breathe.

have you tried turning off the mic power and using the zoom h4n phantom power ?
Are you able to try another mic to test the h4n isn’t faulty, it’s a great recorder, sounds like an issue with the mic.

I really like the MixPre-D alot, I bought it in the hope I could use it for both field use and desktop, it replaced a Duet2 which I wasn’t overly impressed with (preferred duet1) but that’ls another .. boring story.
For field use I’m lost without the mix pre-d but with my mac while it’s great at a lot of things it has a few limitations and not being able to play a USB keyboard and sing into a mic plugged into the D is a bit of a shame.
I guess I’ll probably buy a USBPRE2 aswell, I’m new to the sound devices world, it is heaven.
