And in the most recent versions, this is done via the SOURCE BROWSER. Make sure the LINK option is chosen (lower left) and then when it’s in a bin, you transcode to a DNx codec for editing.

September 21, 2018 at 10:22 pm in reply to: Blackmagic RAW

[Michael Hancock] “And the same is true of Blackmagic Raw. But I think Blackmagic will get it supported by at least Premiere and Avid relatively quickly, and it’s already in Resolve (naturally).”

I agree. BMD already makes the Avid hardware, so it stands to reason that they’ll have support for BRAW in Avid…and certainly Adobe. And unless PRORES RAW sees support in Adobe or Avid…I cannot see high end camera makers implimenting it. If they can’t get it to the client to edit, why use it?

Of course, camera makers ALWAYS make new formats that no NLE supports for a month or two…which is patently silly. But yeah, since Apple isn’t a camera maker, they need to convince the camera makers to adopt that format. And to limit that to FCP-X…if they did that? You won’t see many camera makers adopting it. 2.5 Million users or not. IMHO. How many of that 2.5M is high end enough to use that format?

September 21, 2018 at 5:54 pm in reply to: Avid Perpetual License

I have the perpetual, and pay the annual fee, and update when I want. OR…you can do the subscription model. What I like about the perpetual, is that if you stop paying, it keeps working…it doesn’t STOP working. Adobe…if you stop paying their monthly fee, the apps stop working, period. With Avid, you won’t be left up a creek.

I’m on 2018.3…and I see it in the mixer hamburger menu…second in the list. You don’t have that? I don’t even see a FILTER PAN option. Is there a filter on the audio clips in that track?

In DF timecode, the numbers will go up one frame at a time, just like NDF. The only difference is that one frame number will be dropped every minute, at the top of the minute (so from :29 to :01…dropping the :00)…except every 10th minute. But all the rest of the frame number counting will go up normally.

If your sequence needs to be DF, and not NDF, you need to go to the sequence in the bin, locate the START column, and change the last separator from colon to semi-colon. THAT will make your sequence drop frame, and then the TC Reader will display it as such.

  • OK, are you going…

FILE>OUTPUT>EXPORT TO FILE…and then in the window that appears, in the EXPORT SETTING, choosing EXPORT TO PROTOOLS?

Then in that window, make sure AAF is the EXPORT AS…and that AAF EDIT PROTOCOL is checked off. And then uncheck ALL VIDEO AND DATA TRACKS…only have ALL AUDIO selected, and then CONSOLIDATE MEDIA.

Oh, you said you tried CONSOLIDATE MEDIA and that didn’t work…but the other options did. Hmmm….

Consolidate the sequence first (only audio)…and then do the AAF and COPY ALL MEDIA from the consolidated sequence?

September 19, 2018 at 8:14 pm in reply to: 60 FPS in 24 FPS Timeline?

Well, no matter what, 60fps in a 24fps sequence won’t look like footage shot 24fps. The motion blur won’t be the same. Sure, you’ll have frames removed, and it might look OK, but there will be no motion blur that you see when you shoot 24fps. But you shot the drone footage at 30p…and this at 60p…why not make a 30p sequence and go with that?

  • OK, need more specifics here, sorry.

FIrst off, did you duplicate your sequence and strip out all the video, leaving only audio tracks? Very important not to include video files with this AAF.

And did you consolidate with handles to the external drive, THEN do the AAF, or are you trying to do an embedded AAF?

it’s advisable to transcode to a better editing codec if you don’t have a very beefy machine (fast processor, gobs of RAM, high end graphics card with gobs of RAM) because editing H.264…decoding it on the fly…takes a lot of computing power. And the longer the project, the slower it’ll get. So if you are on something like a laptop, or base iMac, best to convert. And know that the file sizes will increase 3-4 times what they are now.
