If your footage is DVCAM, you gain nothing in capturing 8-bit…unless you are adding lots of graphics, then the GRAPHICS are better in 8-bit, not the DVCAM. When you capture DVCAM via firewire, you are capturing it at full resolution. So it is best to work with it at DVCAM quality from start to finish.

To Edit to Tape you either need to have your sequence loaded in the VIEWER, or simply drag it from the BROWSER onto the Edit to Tape window and choose Assemble Edit or Insert Edit.
For both methods, the tape needs to be black and coded and have TC already on it. And you need to mark and IN point in the ETT window.

That sound a lot like what I do. Making changes…shortening scenes, ALWAYS messes with music and timing, which is one reason making changes is often very difficult.
I usually chop out the sections I need to chop then fix all the cuts I made in the music tracks.
Who said editing was easy? (That might have to be my standard signature…)

Open a new project using the DV/NTSC Easy Setup.
Nothing could be easier.
Now…does that DSR 1800 have a firewire connection? I recently worked with a 1500 that did not.

Apparently it has. That was something I added later when someone else found another possible reason.

By any chance are you judging any of this on an external monitor? You cannot judge what anything looks like on your computer monitor.

DV footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

I am running 10.3.9 and FCP 4.5 with no problems. And I believe that FCP rescue will work for you…

The Absynth plugin could be your culprit. Locate it (FIND – Apple F) and toss it.
Also, 10.3.5 was a spotty update with FCP. Causes a number of issues. If you can, go to 10.3.8, that it the most rock solid. But I am unsure if it is available. Might have to go 10.3.9. I did, but only after I backed up my system and did a clean install…
