I was In the process of trying to clean out my preferences, to try to fix a quirk with exporting in FCP. But I trashed the prefs without first opening FCP. Now it doesn’t want to start up. It keeps exiting before opening any projects.

    Please-what can I do?

    Thanks-

Did you trash the proper prefs? You might have deleted a file that FCP needed.

FCP Rescue is the way to go. Google it and download it.

You might have to reinstall FCP to get it working again…

    Thanks for the response SHane,

    I deleted the files:

    com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
Final Cut Pro 4 Preference file
Final Cut Pro v POA Cache

These are what I read you need to delete. I had done it before, but it had been a long time. Do these sound right?

If these are the correct files, should FCP be starting without them?

    Thanks-

    Ken

    Those sound right. Hmmm…

    Repair Permissions?

    And download that FCP rescue…

Thanks for the quick response Shane,

I repaired the permissions twice, and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. The FCP Rescue doesn’t seem to do anything-but I am using OSX 10.3.5. I think the program requires 10.3.9, so I probably need to upgrade.

Also-it seems to pop-up with a message about a audio plug-in expiring (I had Absynth for a trial period) right before it quits. Could that cause FCP to quit every time until I buy Absynth? If so, how do I make FCP stop looking for it?

    Thanks again-

    Ken

The Absynth plugin could be your culprit. Locate it (FIND – Apple F) and toss it.

Also, 10.3.5 was a spotty update with FCP. Causes a number of issues. If you can, go to 10.3.8, that it the most rock solid. But I am unsure if it is available. Might have to go 10.3.9. I did, but only after I backed up my system and did a clean install…

Thanks again for the help. Shane.

I couldn’t find a audio plugins folder in my FCP data folder, BUT I looked around, and found one in my general library folder. Absynth had created files for the plugins folders, so I just trashed them, and FCP opened! Boy, am I relieved….

Anyway, I will upgrade my OS also-but I think you’re right, 10.3.9 is probably the only one I will be able to download. 10.3.9 work ok with FCP HD 4.5? I’m assuming FCP Rescue works with 4.5?

    Thanks again for the help-

I am running 10.3.9 and FCP 4.5 with no problems. And I believe that FCP rescue will work for you…
