Shane’s stock answers need more sleep. Running on 2.5 hours right now.

    Never post while exhausted.

    My apologies.

#5 Imported music from CD or iTunes

    Shane’s Stock Answer #5:

To get music into FCP, it needs to be an AIFF file at 48khz, 16 bit stereo. So if you want a song from a CD, you go into the iTunes Preferences and set this up under the IMPORTING tab:

File > preferences > importing > import using – AIFF encoder > Setting – Custom
    Sample Rate – 48.000 kHz
    Sample size – 16 bit
    Channels – Stereo

If you have an mp3 that you want to use, then you can convert it thru iTunes as well.

If the piece of music you want to use is something you purchased thru iTunes, I’m afraid I can’t help you there. There are copywrite issues that prevent files from being converted into the format that FCP can recognize.

November 2, 2005 at 4:01 pm in reply to: Dip to Color VS. Cross Dissolve

It’s all aesthetics. There is no standard. Sometimes the footage calls for a cut, sometimes it calls for a cut. Sometimes a dip to black, sometimes a dip to white. There is no STANDARD for when you use them. It is all up to the editor and when the “feel” a certain transition is called for.

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.

    Shane’s Stock Answer #8:

A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv

Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.

Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video

Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV

If for some reason you can’t view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:

    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.

    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.

    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.

    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.

    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices

    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed

If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

November 2, 2005 at 7:07 am in reply to: Shared Storage

To get two FCP stations to access the same media on the same shared storage really requires XSAN, as well as the XServe drive arrays. And XSAN isn’t cheap….there is a per seat license.

    https://www.apple.com/xsan/

I myself wouldn’t mess with “cheap” solutions. Cheap in, cheap out. Cheap breaks. Cheap causes headaches and often lead to expensive things like downtime and equipment purchases that may or may not work.

If you can’t do XSAN, then I’d suggest getting a set of drives for each machine, and duplicate the media. This means that when you transfer the project, that the other editor will have to re-render anything the first guy rendered (something XSAN avoids).

Maybe someone else has a good, working gigabit ethernet SAN solution and will post their experiences.

November 2, 2005 at 5:26 am in reply to: over-expose / blur transition

Yep…it’s an Avid thing. PAINT EFFECT. We can blur and over expose the image then go back again. But we need to keyframe it too. I have also had luck with Joe’s Filters CHROMA GLOW and a keyframes gaussian blur….

    OR

Look at http://www.nattress.com…the Film Effects filters have a great FILM FLASH that does this.

November 2, 2005 at 5:24 am in reply to: 16mm with time code burn

When you get the timecoded version, it usually means that the NON-timecoded version is out there, and what is intended to happen is an offline cut with the timecoded version, then an online assembly with the “clean” master.

Talk to your director, or someone on the project who knows this…

November 2, 2005 at 5:20 am in reply to: Who to address Resume and coverletter to …ATTN: ?

Call the company. Usually a receptionist answers the phone. Ask her “who would I attention a resume to for the position of…?” They will usually give you the name from there. Also, verify the fax number.

And yes, they are VERY used to these types of calls.
