You guys are incredible. I really appreciate the help. I’d give both of you a hug if I could, honestly.

Here’s what I came up with so far.

    Summary
This proposal is for a 30 second web commercial and includes two high-definition cameras, two camera operators, production, and post-production. A sample render will be available for preview via web 1 week after shoot. Approval will be requested. Final output will be available for download via web.

    Rates
    A-Camera Operator $300/day
    B-Camera Operator $300/day
    8 hours of editing $50/hr
    Re-edits $50/hr

    Production
Crew will need 2-3 hours of setup of audio and lighting equipment at location prior to shoot.

    Post-production
Post-production includes editing of footage, color-correction, color-grading, incorporating graphic elements, and royalty free music.

    What do you guys think?

Phenomenal advice! That’s exactly what I needed.

I am not handling any of the creative aspects of the job nor the pre-production. I’m shooting the web commercial and editing it.

So how should I lay this thing out? Should I do a summary, then list pre-production (ie. time it will take for lighting setup, audio, etc.), then list post-production and a summary of what we’ll be doing? I’m having trouble coming up with the vocabulary, I’m that green (which is okay, my point of contact at the agency is my best friend who is having a fun time watching me fumble around with this).

Because 15% of our next 4 weddings is far more than double his day rate 😉

So I take it most people are paying “day rates” and not percentages? Really need some insight here.

David, the web is here. People are going to be watching our clients wedding videos over and over again anywhere in the world, not just in a clients office or home. I don’t blame you for feeling that way either, you obviously haven’t seen our wedding films 😉

Brent, your take is interesting. I guess it’s just a personality thing. I don’t have a problem asking a guest to move his big head out of the shot, but I wouldn’t ever cause tension that could ruin the day for both the photographer and I, and potentially the bride and groom. I do make the best of what I got in post and make it clear to the bride and groom that we will give them an edited product and do whatever it takes to make it flow smoothly, and that means cutting out awkward moments. I actually like being at the weddings and want everyone to feel the same way. I want to document the day, blemishes and all.

I do however feel like our job is a lot rougher than the photographers and don’t undercharge my clients. I don’t understand how some photographers are pulling a bigger cut than the videographers.

Brent, that is EXCELLENT advice. Thanks for the response.

@grinner, we’ll taking it a step further than that and turning it into a real production. I have 4 videographers for our wedding on Saturday, 2 5d Mkii’s, 1 7D, and a Panasonic HMC-150. Lot’s more cordinatin’ to do than that!

This is great info! Thanks guys. It looks like we’ll have to develop a system of our own and keep refining it. Love this site!

    Haha, thanks for the response.

I mean getting them all of the information that they’ll need for the shoot. Do you use email for that? Or is it all over the phone?

Kind of silly questions I guess. I was just wondering if maybe someone had a program they used that makes communication a lot easier.
