OK, apparently something was wrong with the copy I made of the P2 card. I copied it again, and this time everything worked as expected. I tried it from both locked and unlocked cards and was able to give new user clip names to the copies regardless. Also, I then moved the Contents folder to an external FW drive, and the .mov links created by Raylight still worked.

Hey Marcus, thanks for your input. I get the concept, but I’m struggling with step 1 in P2 CMS.

Using an unlocked copy of the P2 card contents, I can right-click on the clip in P2 CMS, successfully change the user clip name and click OK, but apparently it doesn’t permanently change the metadata in that file. I also tried exporting the clip as a copy in a new location. If you then scan the folder with Raylight (I tried the original folder and the exported copy) it still doesn’t pick up the new user clip name. (I have the box checked in Raylight to use the user clip name) If I open the clips again with P2 CMS, they have the original user clip name, not the one I changed it to. It is just not saving the changes I’ve made.

Is there any convenient way to rename the generic letter & number names given to MXF files from a P2 card? The workflow we would like to use is:

1. In the field, copy P2 card to MacPro/Firewire drive
2. In the field, review and rename clips
3. Return to studio and copy clips to Xsan
4. Editors load pre-named clips into FCP from Xsan

Raylight works great, but of course the problem is when you copy everything to the Xsan, the links are busted. According to Raylight’s folks, their software is dependent upon QT to make these links work, and they are absolute, not relative in nature, so even leaving the links in the same folder with original MXF files does not work.

P2 Log works well, but still costs us alot of time doing the conversion in the field.

So again, our problem is two-fold: 1. renaming the clips so that they appear in the Finder as the descriptive names we give them, and 2. being able to copy those files to the Xsan and open them in FCP6. Any ideas?
