Hope this is not evolving into a 24 against 30 pointless battle.
you guys are all right from my point of view:
On one side the medium IS the message, and the frame rate can and should be also used accordingly to the language we want to to adopt for the specific project.
If our project talks the language of pure, high quality images then the higher frame rate we can use the better. If our projects wants to shout classic cinema then 24 is our magic number. And if our idea is better expressed by a lo-fi aesthetic, why not go down to 18?
On the other end it is very important to consider where you are gonna show your final product. I am sitting in europe, so the perceptive difference between 24 and 25 fps doesn’t even touch me, but I believe 25 for me or 30 for you would be a wise choice for anything that is broadcast.
Finally, If the “refresh rate” of the human eye is approximately 12 fps..(of course it varies with the lights conditions and so on) the 6 frames difference between 24 and 30 should be almost imperceptible, especially to the untrained eye of the final user. to “see” any difference we should grow that fps exponentially and go to 48, 96 etc.. but then, where would we show it?
