  • Actualy the BlackMagic support guys havn’t been of any help regarding any of the issues the Shuttle have…

  • As a side, I also had a shift between image and recorded sound when using external recorder. I read that other people had it and that Atomos (Ninja) make a special feature in the latest firmware to compensate the shift of 3 to 4 frames… On my side it wasn’t a real shift as the voice was getting slower than the image, then back in sync…
    It seems it is actualy the image that is lacking, not the sound which is constant speed…

    Whatever, I wouldn’t recomment anybody going on a serious project with the D800 and external recorder for now (one year after the D800 started selling…)
    I’m going to Nikon Pro services in the coming weeks to have the D800 checked… Maybe it is just mine (or some of them…)

  • I definitely need to do more testing.
    Maybe there is a gamma shift when recorded as prores that would explain why it is so much darker ?
    Will have to compare to DNxHD and uncompress as you suggested…

    When grading, I can lower the brightness of the highlights and get some detail back that are not there in the clip recorded on the D800. Lighting the blacks also give some details back.
    I shot the same footage while changing the profile, going from neutral to vivid then special video profiles flat_10 and flat_11. I still have to compare the results.

    If I just change the clip from 1080i to 1080p in the clip info, the “stair” problem is corrected on the edges inside the picture. But it appear on real movements :

    BTW, the “stair” problem also appear in a rendered video. I actualy rendered the same clip with every possible settings (enterlaces upper/lower and progressive) in a 30fps and a 29.97fps timeline, with the same result.

  • I did some more testing today and this is what I found :

    What I did is :
    – record some footage on the D800, 1080p30 to the internal compactflash
    – record the same footage on the Hyperdeck Shuttle Pro 2
    – import both in a FCP X project set to 1080p@29.97, put them on the timline in parallel and use the crop tool to split the image in two
    – zoom to 200%

    Image from the Shuttle is more contrast
    Image from the Shuttle doesn’t seem to better handle highlight
    Image from the Shuttle is ALIASED SO MUCH it is not usable

    I also tried with a real 1080p@30 project : same result.
    The only solution to get a better image is to check, for each clip, the “deinterlace” option in the info window.

  • I just tried the 256G Vertex4 with the Hyperdeck with last firmware and ProRes recording, and I was able to record a one minute clip.
    I’ll have more tests soon, but maybe the bandwidth drop when recording ProRes is enough to make this SSD drive working.

  • I think I lost myself, thinking I HAD to have the clips seen progressive by FCP.
    The Ninja have a pulldown and can create real 1080p footages from the 1080psf signal (this is what I read). So the problem should not arise.

    Finaly, keeping the prores clips as they are, interlaced upper field dominance and importing to a 25p project seems to be the way to go…

  • I’ve just tested the latest Vertex 4 firmware (1.4.3.1) with the Shuttle.
    Recording goes a little bit longer before dropping frames, when recording DNxHD !

    It seems you really have an incompatibility with this SSD as it can handle uncompressed data way faster than you should do for DNxHD, even with 3gbps S-ATA…

    I’m sad not to hear about you more often. You were supposed to get in touch with OCZ, any news ?
    What about your findings ?

    I’m sorry but there MUST be something in the Shuttle that make it having so bad throughput with the Vertex 4. Maybe it is the components you are using for S-ATA ?

    Still no news either of a version of the speed test tool that can mimic the Shuttle. This tool still say my Vertex 4 SSD is able to handle full uncompressed HD in 12bits 4:4:4…. this is one more proof to me that the problem relies inside the Shuttle and not in the SSD…

  • Still no news from BM…

    It is obvious their statment of the support page about “using the disk speed test tool” to see if the SSD can work with the Shuttle is wrong…

    After many warnings and contacts with the support team, sentense is still here to fool customers, I still have no answer about my Vertex 4 issue, no clue about BM testing new (fastest) SSD and if they had an answer from OCZ.

    BM, are you taking care of your customers ?

    (even if I KNOW the Vertex 4 is not in the compatibility list…)

    As a computer/dev expert… I would SO love to know how the hyperdeck is writing data to the SSD so I could write a simulation software… and maybe understand what is the shuttle doing wrong…

  • My tests were made with the 1.4RC, which is the one bringing more speed.
    Now there is a 1.4 final, but I have no Windows 7 to do the OCZ upgrade…

    I will try when I find one, but BMD can have a try too… They told me they were in touch with OCZ but I have no news since then.

    The Black Magic Disk Speel Test AND some user tests with “uncompressable” data showed the Vertex 4 “should” support the throughoutput of the Shuttle as it is better than the Vertex 3.

    I just can’t understand what is the Shuttle doing… Are you using specific S-ATA commands the Vertex 3 may handle better than the Vertex 4 ?

    You should also create an option in the Disk Speed Test tool to specificaly target SSDs, so we won’t think it is possible to write a 1080p30 RGB 4:4:4 on it while the shuttle can’t write a dnXhd 1080i25 YUV 4:2:2 10 bit stream…

    But I hope you’ll keep searching and not wait for OCZ to release a new firmware…
