There are tons of options to do this outside of Final Cut. What we want is the ability to edit native 24p footage in a 29.97 timeline and have 3:2 pulldown added to that footage – either automatically or by using a filter.

Is there a definitive answer to what ProRes non-HQ is? Is it 8-bit or 10-bit?

My understanding is that they’re well aware of the issue, yet have no interest in changing it. Someone here posted some info on it a while back. I believe the way FCP works, 2224 is crucial to getting RT performance.

You can play ProRes HD off your internal drive if you want. In fact, you could probably play it off an iPod.
ProRes is only 240mbps. Firewire offers bandwidth of 400mbps, and a single disk drive is usually 40MB/s or higher.
If you’re dropping frames, chances are it has nothing to do with your disk speed. More likely your CPU/GPU/RAM.

99% of Mac apps are just apps. They don’t run in the background, they don’t alter the kernel, etc. So technically it makes no difference the vast majority of the time. If an application isn’t launched, then it’s the same as if you never installed it in the first place.
