I saw the post and thought I replied. Guess I didn’t.
Basically, Apple didn’t always provide uncompressed codecs for use with Final Cut. And until just now with Final Cut 5, they didn’t provide HD versions of it. That’s the main reason why Blackmagic provided their own. In fact, their codec was made for the AJA Kona cards, before Blackmagic started making their own Decklink cards.
If you’re working from YUV 4:2:2 source and finish (Digibeta for example), then it doesn’t matter which one you use as far as quality is concerned. The end result is the same. Actually, Blackmagic reccomends the Apple codec because you get more RT effects. Blackmagic’s own Easy Setups actually use the Apple codec, not their own. However, when converting from an RGB codec or a YUV 4:1:1 source (like DV), then the Blackmagic codec is known to be much better at converting the color space by reducing the blocky artifacts that are typically created from that process. Honestly, I’d avoid using so many links of refernces in the chain. You’ve got Final Cut referencing the media, Motion referencing that Final Cut project, and the same Final Cut project referencing the Motion project (which is of course referencing Final Cut). What you’re doing would allow you to make editing changes to things after it’s been processed by Motion, and while Apple’s documentation makes it sound like this should work, it’s really messy and appearantly isn’t very reliable. I would not use the embed option when exporting to Motion. Plus I would save the Motion project as it’s own entity, then import that Motion project into Final Cut and replace the clips in the sequence with it.

Change the rendering to RGB and see what it looks like. Play around with the other settings like Super White and also try an 8-bit sequence (Animation is 8-bit I believe).

It’ll definately work fine within it’s limits. DVCProHD is known to work on them, so you’ll definately get two DV streams from it at the very least. It won’t break or anything like that (unless it was going to anyways).
What’s important to you? How often to you need to bring media to your Powerbook? It is slower so you will be crippling your capabilites in comparison to a full-size FW. Then again, a full-size FW drive is very limmited compared to a stripped array. It just depends on what your needs are. Just remember, the internal disk on your Powerbook is just as fast as an iPod.

BTW, I have a used $90K Symphony & a $40K Adrenaline that I’m willing to get rid of. The Symphony will never do HD & the Adrenaline will do HD for a $10K upgrade.”I think the debate between the two systems starts and ends with this comment. It’s a no-brainer.

I’m all for it. I love Apple’s OS and software. Their hardware is top of the line… for a few months. Then for years it just becomes dated and lacking new technology whilst the prices stay the same.

Thanks but I think you’re confused about “720p 23.98 not supported”. Decklink cards can’t output 720p 23.98 over SDI because there’s no such thing. That format does not exist over SDI. But Final Cut sequences and quicktime files of that format with the BMD codec works just fine.
Anyway I figured it out. The problem was a faulty disk in my RAID causing memory corruption. It was affecting the rendering process of all pro apps including Compressor and even Cinema Tools.

I use a Sony 23″ GDM-900 CRT combined with a Key Digital transcoder to allow component input. These monitors can be found refurbished for $700 or less. Picture-wise, they are equivalent to the high-end brodacast HD monitors that Sony sells. The major downside is you need a transcoder and you can’t display standard def 480i natively.
That 17″ Chris mentioned sounds like a great deal, but you will not get a true 1080 HD image on a 17″. You need to calculate the monitor’s dot pitch and size to see figure out if it will display 1080 lines without the lines overlapping one another. Even with a very fine dot pitch, 17″ is very small and probably won’t cut it.
