    Thanks Mike. Much appreciated.

I looked up the ADVC-55…do you know of anything else off the top of your head that is cheaper than $200 that will work with Vegas 8? If not, that’s alright.

    Thanks again.

What I do is….hook up my sony hi8 cam to the dvd recorder, burn it to a dvd then put it on my harddrive and import it, edit it and when I’m done…burn it to dvd.

Your saying… I’d have better quality by using some sort of capturing device on my computer, import it to my software, edit it and use what special effects I’m going to use and then burn it? This will make the effects look even better also..correct?

I’ve got a device that came with my pinnacle software that I bought about 3 years ago. I can use that can’t I? My computer has two firewire ports.

    Rick,

[Rick Mac] “I know this does not exactly answer your question”

Actually, you did answer my question. I apprecitate you taking the time.

Being just a home video type guy…I would be going from mpeg to DVD quite a bit.

Well, I took the plunge today. I bought the $99 Vegas 6 and they said it comes with the serial number and it can be upgraded. thanks to this thread I will be able to upgrade for $149.

First of all….if it were me I’d get a bigger and better hard drive. You can find great deals on 400 and 500g all the time.

Second….depending on what kind of cpu cooler you have, I’d over clock your processor some. If you stay within the voltage range you should be OK and not shorten the life of it…at least not anything to speak of. But make sure you have a good cpu cooler. I’d check out something like a zalman 9700 nt.

Ram…this will overclock when you OC your processor. Some brands do better than others. I’m not sure After Effects will utilize 4 gigs with the setup you got.

Also….the new intel processors coming out are made to process/ encode video alot better and quicker. You may want to think about that.

If you have a custom built computer, you can overclock your cpu and ram a little. I don’t know about your specific processor…but you should be able to easily go to 2.0+. I know I have a comfortable E6600 at 3.2 (up from 2.4) You will need to make sure you have a decent computer case for good airflow also.

An excellent forum to find out about this is hardwarelogic.com

the link the other poster gave you looks like it has some very good suggestions in it. Also…blackviper.com has some tweaks on it. It goes through all the OS stuff and tells you what is safe to disable to speed up your computer a little.

    Hope this helps.

Does this apply if I buy the Vegas 6 for $99 and then I can upgrade to vegas 8 for $149?

I seen the deal at B&H when someone mentioned it to me. It’s only the cd-rom…but I’m assuming it has the serial number with it.

Thank you all for your input. It helps my decision alot more than when I first started. I also appreciate Elvis’s comparison of the two in a simple beginner’s language. That was great!

So….I think I’ll get Vegas and then later on get AE. I’m very happy I found this site.

    Thanks again, to you all.

Thanks soniclight, but a couple questions:

    1. Did you do this? Did you buy the vegas 6 cd-rom and then upgrade via the sony software website?

Only reason why I ask this is because B&H says it’s selling only the cd-rom, no box or manuals. To upgrade to Vegas 8 you will need the serial number from Vegas 6. So, I was wondering if you got yours from B&H and if it had the serial number on the envelope the cd-rom came in?

Yes, this way would save about $100 bucks. Every little bit helps.
