Hey I just started to use AE and noticed that when i try to tackle tuts (since I’m still a newbie) with particles or ones that require a lot of power, my PC lags. I tried some heavy particle tutorials and when I try to RAM preview, it takes like 2mins to preview a 10-15s part of my project and it’s set at HALF too.

    My configurations are as follows:

    Core 2 Duo 1.86ghz
    2GB DDR RAM
    Nvidia 256MB Geforce 7600 GT
and some old and crappy HD with 80GB…i THINK it’s the SAMSUNG SP0802N. Not sure.

So I was just wondering, if I want to do more After Effects and possibly 3D with other programs what is the most efficient and effective way to upgrade my PC without having to buy a new one. I am somewhat short on cash and so don’t want to shell out a lot on this upgrade.

My dad suggested to just add another 2GB of ram to make it 4 in total. Will that be the best solution and the most affordable/effective?

Hopefully someone knows haha. Thanks in advance.

RAM is relatively cheap. Start there.

For more answers sniff out the posts on this forum that have asked the same question again and again on this forum. Go back through earlier posts, there are a bunch there. Try the search engine and search on the word “computer” or “system” and you will likely find a bunch of answers.

    Hi,

it could also be how your computer is set up or optimized or not with windows and for After Effects. You would not believe what a difference that alone can make. First off check out the following article on optimizing for AE.

    https://xeler8r.com/downloads/class/NAB2005/Supersonic_Rendering_Speeds_05.pdf

And yes, the other user is right, RAM is cheap and a good start.

    Good Luck

First of all….if it were me I’d get a bigger and better hard drive. You can find great deals on 400 and 500g all the time.

Second….depending on what kind of cpu cooler you have, I’d over clock your processor some. If you stay within the voltage range you should be OK and not shorten the life of it…at least not anything to speak of. But make sure you have a good cpu cooler. I’d check out something like a zalman 9700 nt.

Ram…this will overclock when you OC your processor. Some brands do better than others. I’m not sure After Effects will utilize 4 gigs with the setup you got.

Also….the new intel processors coming out are made to process/ encode video alot better and quicker. You may want to think about that.

If you have a custom built computer, you can overclock your cpu and ram a little. I don’t know about your specific processor…but you should be able to easily go to 2.0+. I know I have a comfortable E6600 at 3.2 (up from 2.4) You will need to make sure you have a decent computer case for good airflow also.

An excellent forum to find out about this is hardwarelogic.com

the link the other poster gave you looks like it has some very good suggestions in it. Also…blackviper.com has some tweaks on it. It goes through all the OS stuff and tells you what is safe to disable to speed up your computer a little.

    Hope this helps.

thanks for the suggestions. I’l think about the ram 🙂 and optimizing sounds like a good idea as well. However, OCing…I am not sure if I am skilled enough to do it cause I heard you gotta actually MANUALLY adjust it on the hardware.
