    Sorry Mark/Todd

The ACA IS an Avid customer group. The board was invited by Avid. This is purely an Avid sponsored initiative (I believe it came from the highest parts of Avid management).

Avid chose the executive board of the ACA (vast majority broadcast suits) and then is asking for Avid users to join to “gather ideas for the future of the industry”. So, they want you to pay them to tell them what to do so you can buy more product from them. If that feels right to you, I got some ocean-front in Arizona for sale.

Avid has its Community Forums to draw on. Avid had an “influencers group” I was part of that had web conferences on new software, features and such. There are beta programs. There are plenty of ways for Avid to get information right now. Another layer and another “class” of customer will not make it more efficient.

Avid Connect is another story. If you want to pony up $300 to listen and see Avid Everywhere, more power to you. That’s an outside function versus an inside organization.

Cough up the $350 in advance or the $500 and you too can give Avid advice!

[Neil Sadwelkar] “In that larger universe, Avid is a sort of a minority, niche platform.”

Yup. The fact Avid cuts features and reality TV (among broadcast) means nothing to most people. Avid has not been able to communicate who they are (even Hernandez admits that) and WHY new editors should choose Avid. The fact that Honey Boo-Boo was cut on an Avid means nothing to that “why” (that’s a fact that would move me to use another platform immediately!).

Look at Avid Everywhere. Aimed solely at big broadcast, and Louis Hernandez stated that AE is Avid’s vision and centerpiece going forward. MC and PT will be “key parts” of the Avid Everywhere solution. Loss-leader is a correct term. The company will never make money selling one-off MC seats to freelancers like me or small shops. They need big-iron to big clients. MC is a way to sell that big iron. And honestly I think Avid is making the correct moves, albeit very late, with Avid Everywhere.

I am with you Shane. Great post.

Even straight cutting is way slower in Avid than it was is 7 and now especially compared to X. Love Avid for some things, but as the competition gets better, faster and, yes, cheaper, I find myself using it less and less. Maybe one or two jobs in 2013.

Man, you love those WAV files! 🙂

Do Aiff’s behave correctly? I just finished a gig yesterday with the same setup (versions) as you and saw no odd behavior with my VO and music AIFF files.

Same here. Just got a tricked out rMBP 15″ last month and FCPX 10.1.1 runs like a dream. Ripped out a job for a client yesterday that he booked an entire day for, but the speed of FCPX and having all the tools in a simple, elegant interface got us done in 5 hours (flat project rate, so no loss of revenue). He was thrilled and I got to play 9 holes of golf. I like that.

[Chris Kenny] “unless it’s that Avid’s collaborative editing platform lost this one. “

Exactly Chris. Nary an Avid mention. That has got to hurt. No wonder there are no CNN guys on the Executive Board of the Avid Customer Association.

Adobe Anywhere and Avid Everywhere? How much are these guys paying marketing?

February 25, 2014 at 6:36 pm in reply to: what are you hearing these days?

[Pam Picard] “Agency/editing shops/indep editors are more interested and seem to making the switch (although I’d say just in the past year or so).”

I see this happening. So many people focus on broadcast and film as it’s the only thing out there. There is a big world of visual storytelling outside those markets. A lot bigger world.

I see corporate, agencies (just finished introducing FCPX to a very large agency in my region. This is my fourth class of about 15 people each) and schools (I teach upwards of 90 grad students a year on FCPX) giving the software a try. One man shops like me are using it more and more and this could eventually get post houses to at least add a system or two to capture some of that potential revenue. Apple has the time and resources to make the product really good and not have to rush anything.

Quite honestly, I dont think Apple was counting on the “older” entrenched editor crowd making a huge switch. They are playing for the future. MHO.
