Actually, it really is all about the individual and what works for them. So yes, it’s about me. I could really care less that X doesn’t go to tape or lacks an ugly audio meter and mixer. Not my workflow. I don’t want Apple, IMO, to waste time developing those capabilities.

OTOH, for some, R11 is FCP8, what they always wanted with those options. That’s great and more power to them. There are plenty of products out there that fit plenty of needs.

Just not for me, and remember it’s all about….

For my commercial work for agencies, there usually is a color correct line-item in the budget. That’s not me; I’m the storyteller. We bring our stuff to a colorist, who by the way, uses Resolve! Same with audio. Broadcast goes to an audio house and an audio engineer.

But for that web and non-broadcast stuff I wear all those hats and quite honestly X does about everything I need. I loathe the idea of moving to other platforms when it’s not really necessary. Again, I think a lot of folks feel they have to do it simply because it can be done (with varying degrees of success). An effective workflow that is clean and efficient is what I like.

Seriously? So you have R11 with lousy playback, “brutal” as you put it, lousy dissolves, crappy titles and you don’t understand compound clips. Yup, R11 must be better, by god, ’cause it’s got tracks!! Oh, and a mixer, which personally I never used in FCP7 and hated in MC so I guess I don’t miss it in X. 😉

And how much color correction do most projects need that X or X and plugins can’t handle? That’s one thing that has amused me with the R11-love. “Gotta round trip to R11 for color.” I would say most times not. Why complicate things by forcing a round trip? I mean, I have R11 and am learning it, but until it becomes seriously better for editing, it will have limited use in my work. Of course it looks a helluva lot like X, but those damn tracks get in the way all the time….Just my early morning, one-cup-of-coffee opinion. YMMV.

Brave man. Even Avid folks suggest that AMA is best used to just choose selects then transcode.

Hi Oliver –

I can see your frustrations! Another point of curiosity. I like to avoid going to multiple systems as much as possible, to the point where it has influence in the workflow and tools. I had a gig with a producer a couple months ago that I wanted to use X for but some work had previously been in 7, so I felt it was safer just to stay there. Maybe I am off-base, but, like my project timelines/sequences, I try to keep my workflow as simple as possible. Why force an issue?

Knowing that you needed OMF’s (which admittedly I have not supplied to an audio house in years), why did you start in X and not simply use FCP7?

However, today I start on a project with hundreds of DSLR clips to sync. If I get audio problems, I will be cursing right there with you! 🙂

It would be nice, however, so select a bunch of video clips and a bunch of corresponding external audio clips and go “fetch” and it does more than one at a time. I don’t think the OP got a definitive answer on this. I am interested as I have material coming in today that will involve a couple hundred audio and DSLR video clips….and did I read right that Plural Eyes can do this?
