All is not lost Bob. Just use that old PowerMac G5 as a file server from the SAN to your Leading Edge 386 PC. I’m sure you can also make use of that DF/X Composium, somewhere.

  • I saw this in the Blackmagic forum and responded there…

  • The old rendering to a network share problem…
If I remember correctly, it’s a 64bit Quicktime bug. Adobe figured out a workaround, but I guess no one else has or is interested. I wish Apple would address this. It’s been going on for years.

  • Is there any part of the Pinnacle Systems broadcast line still around? DVExcel? That production switcher they released?

Deko begat AVG and was killed before it was released I believe. They more recently bought Orad, and that is the current offering. That reminds me… I saw Deko when it was still part of Grass Valley / Dubner and was a VESA card set for a Windows NT system in 1994. It truly was the descendent of the Dubner CG line.

I know MediaStream is gone. Thunder was still being supported when I last contacted Avid… many, many years ago. Maybe they have parts for a Flash Graphics if I need it?

I understand that, but can you see the monitor changing formats as you change the output settings on the Blackmagic card? Does it do anything besides produce audio?

  • [Tim Wilson] “When Avid acquired Pinnacle in 2005, there were zero Cinewaves in stock, zero on the production schedule, nobody left on the team — so when Avid took it off the books, it really was strictly a bookkeeping exercise. “

Thank you for the backstory and info.

[Tim Wilson] “Please note again, the Pinnacle deal was being driven by Avid Broadcast”

The station I’m at bought two Pinnacle MediaStream servers just before the acquisition. They were delivered as an Avid system and were to handle playout and ingest of SD and HD programs and commercials. It never functioned as promised and was EOLed shortly thereafter. I talked to a guy at NAB a couple of years ago that had a similar story of Avid’s MediaStream at a midwestern station. Apparently the main problem was not enough bandwidth in the system. The thought was that perhaps Pinnacle wasn’t completely forthcoming on the system’s development.

The last Avid (nee Pinnacle) product we bought was a Thunder HD in 2007. It’s still running. The MediaStream was quickly replaced with Omneon. (now Harmonic)

Have you tried switching between different video standards to see if the monitor displays anything? Different frame rates? If the card is outputting a signal, the monitor might indicate the standard and framerate in the corner. If you monitor shows something similar, then you know the output from the card is working… Actually, for the fact that you can hear audio, you know the card is doing something. If HDMI works like SDI, the audio is embedded in the video stream. It’s possible that whatever part of the monitor that de-embeds the audio works independently of the video processing.
