I remember reading in the trade publications, almost 30 years ago when NFL Films starting shooting Betacam. I seem to remember this being in addition to film, not supplanting it.
Yeah, the original oxide Betacam. Probably with Plumbicon BVP-3’s. 🙂

There’s some JVC and Panasonic stuff near the beginning, but the RM-440 was the first and probably my favorite.I don’t include the Accom Affinity. It was a tragic waste of time.

I was going to guess DFX/Composium, based on your first post. I worked with an AD that wanted to buy a used one in 1998. By that time, After Effects had pretty much supplanted it, and I became a pariah for suggesting that.
I did see one in operation in Chicago in the early 1990’s.
I also ran a Colorgraphics DP/MAX and DP/4:2:2. Weird stuff from Madison WI that did some of the same stuff as the DFX.

I would bet that after what Avid did to us with their support of the MediaStream servers, we will never buy another Avid product.
Also, around 15 years ago, they gave the worst product demo to the company I work for. Higher-ups ended up buying Accom. Accom!!!
But it’s a new day right? They have a lot of rebuilding of trust I think; and I hope they do, as I was once a big supporter.

Took note the other day that Harris Broadcast has a splash page saying they are going announce something big, in New York, in a little over two weeks. With all the other consolidation going on in the industry (i.e. Belden-Miranda-Grass Valley) What’s to say that Harris and Avid couldn’t become one? I had heard that Harris needed to change their name after they were jettisoned from the parent. Avid might be a name they could use?
Some of the products fit. How about an Avid Deco-Inscriber?

Some things to think about… a PCB card to support two CPUs is much more complicated than a single CPU and is therefore more expensive. If we are moving in the direction where more and more software can take advantage of GPUs for general purpose work, perhaps we won’t need as much CPU anyway.
Of course, living in the here-and-now, you need a machine that takes advantage of the software that’s available. Completely understandable.
Personally, I’ll probably buy a new MacPro system. I currently have a single processor 2008 MacPro. It’s been good, but even with a nVidia GTX660Ti video card and a Highpoint RAID, Resolve is a pig to work with. It’s time.

I remember back years ago in the Avid-L forums; guys would come in and tell us that Avids were crap and we all should buy Media 100 systems, because Avids were only used for ‘editing film’ and not made for broadcast. Strange huh?
I remember a conversation I once had with a guy. He asked me what I did my design work in. I told him Photoshop. He proceeded to explain to me that Photoshop was only for ‘editing photos’ and I couldn’t possibly use it for design. I thought I was designing, perhaps I should have listened to him.
Way back in my Amiga days, I’d go into online forums where we would be schooled by Mac and PC users as to how we were just using toys. Strange, a lot of great 3D software we still use today was first developed on the Amiga. (Lightwave, Cinema 4D, Blender?) Even 3D Studio MAX can trace its roots back to the Atari systems back in the 80’s. But all those machines were just playthings, perhaps we shouldn’t have been using them.
So thank you for enlightening us and saving us from what could have been imminent doom.

I had an issue with Maxon Cinema 4D R14.
Doing a single, long movie render with the regular controls worked ok and rendered in the expected time.
When I set up a batch render within Cinema, it slowed down to a crawl when I left it alone. Then I remembered AppNap.
