You didn’t say which battery you were running, but I’m assuming the factory battery. Since the camera powers up on AC, the problem could be either a battery problem, charger problem or (most likely) the onboard battery/AC switch built into the power socket. This switch seems to be fragile, and seems to fail (get stuck) in the AC mode, which makes the camera think the AC cord is plugged in when its not, disconnecting the battery socket. If this is whats going on your looking at a JVC service center visit.
If you still use factory style batteries, you need to ditch them and get a professional battery, it will make a world of difference, and eliminate the power socket switch problem, and all the other battery headaches
If you plan on keeping the camera for a while, now is the time to change over while you can still get battery mounts from JVC.I like (and use) the Anton Bauer Tandem Charger, and the Trim Pack 14 Logic Series battery. This battery will last for a couple of hours under normal use. The nice feature of the tandem charger is that it acts as the AC supply, and mounts to the camera like the battery. The tandem can be mounted on the camera with the battery, so you can charge while shooting on AC. If you pull the AC, the charger passes the battery power through to the camera without interruption. The AC cord is a standard NEMA, which is a lot better than the fragile factory charger/AC system. It also conditions the battery, like most AB charging systems. It is a very flexible set up.
The downside is the battery will make the camera back heavy (which I actually like), and the cost. Charger, mount and one battery will set you back about a grand. Additional batteries are about 200 bucks. If you want to charge multiple batteries at the same time, you will have to spring for a different charger.
IDX also makes a set-up for this camera, same basic price range. I went with Anton Bauer because I like the AB-JVC battery mount better, and I have used AB products for years and they have always worked well.Scott Sheriff

Get needed drivers.
Do a clean install.
Manually install QT7 from the SL disc.Been running 6.0.6 /SL since SL came out. All is well.

There is no substitute for experience and skill, which you can’t buy at iphone prices. So imovie/iphone/WMM and hacks that use them are a good match, they don’t have the skills to take advantage of a real edit suite. They just need a ‘guitar hero’ toy to play with.

In a couple of years, some of these ‘johnny come lately’ types will have just that, a couple of years experience. While some of us will have a couple more to add to the decades we already have. And sure the consumer toy will have more bells and whistles. While there have been people that have cranked out ‘real’ projects on toys, like the PXL-2000, but this is an anomaly. To do a serious amount of work, you are going to need serious gear, and skills.
If a client thinks some low-hour pilot, with a consumer toy is the way to go, yes, I will be laughing.We already see a version of that here all the time, and it often looks something like this:
“I have a series of ___ shows that I agreed to do. They are multi-cam and were shot on RED. I have to deliver a the project tomorrow, but my 13″ MB is taking forever to render the project, even though I have a really fast system dive, that is only 89% full. HELP!”So, in a couple of years we will see a bunch of threads like this with iphone substituted for the MB

Sell your octocore?
Now that the iphone 4 is out, your octo is worthless. You might as well donate it, or it will just end up in the ‘sand crawler robot pile’.
No editor in his right mind would buy it, because real editors will be using iphone.As far as how much per hour you should charge, that is hard to say, since you didn’t mention if you were imovie/iphone certified or not.
Having that certif, makes you an editor, and really ups your rate…duh

The DVD that ships with FCP is sufficient to get you started if you already know how to edit. And everything else is in the FCP pdf, which you can download for free.Scott Sheriff

Gate weave
Hair in gate
Torn sprocket holes
Jail bar scratches
Burnt frame from being stilled too long, or bad sprocket
Ugly splices
Break (best if in mid-frame and not at a splice)
Light leaks (ok that’s been done to death)
Bad frame registration
Un-blooped optical track splicesAny, or all of these will make video seem a lot more like beloved film!
