5D/7D. Lots of fan boy hype and very hip and trendy. Neither would make my top five list unless I needed a paparazzi sniper cam for doing TMZ work, or was going to shoot a lot of no permit guerrilla type stuff.
I guess if it falls in your budget and would fill the camera void, and that is the only requirement. It will do.
In the real world, these cameras have serious drawbacks that anyone choosing it would have to balance the Pro’s and Con’s and see if is worth using.Scott Sheriff

Don’t even think about signing a non-compete with this person. It’s pointless since she isn’t an editor, and you are not attempting to take her ‘producer’ job. I don’t really see where you are competing with her. And as Cory pointed out, these are notoriously hard to enforce in many states. If you check into it, you may find out this is a violation of your states labor laws. If a client decides that she isn’t providing value, and you are, that is her fault. Not yours. If she doesn’t like it, and decides not to offer you a couple of low pay jobs this year it doesn’t sound like your missing out on much of anything.Scott Sheriff

I would use Sherlock Holmes logic. Eliminate all possible causes, and whatever is left has got to be it.OK so we have eliminated one suspect-capturing to the system drive.
I don’t want to sound like a hater, but I wouldn’t trust the genius bar guys to know squat about setting up an editing system. Could be they didn’t do a clean install as that is not the normal Apple method. And (IMHO) it is really to your benefit as a user to do your own system work. Or at least find another experienced editor to work on your system, instead of the GB guys. Best way to move up to a new version of either FCP or the OS is to do it on a fresh drive. That way if it behaves badly, you can pop the old drive back in and get back to work. Going to a new OS and/or FCP version is really not something that should be done if it will effect your work, or you don’t have a back up.
Best way to check for updates is to use the “Check for updates” function under the apple icon if your machine is hooked to the net. Always clone your system drive first in case an update adds a ‘feature’ you don’t want. That way its easy to roll back the update. You may need to do this multiple times, as some updates don’t show up until you have done previous.
Repair permissions is in the disc utilities. Pretty standard thing to do (along with trashing your preferences) if your having problems. If your unfamiliar, read up on these first.
Are you capturing the footage with FW, or a capture card? If you are using a card, you will probably need to update the drivers for SL.
It could also just be a bad cable. Or maybe a bad recording. Or both.

Without more specifics such as what you were capturing, and how. Let me through out a few ideas.
Was your FCP upgrade and SL clean installs?
Did you update your drivers?
Are you capturing to the system drive?
Did you do all the Prokit and SL updates until there were no more?
Repair Permissions?4GB RAM isn’t all that much, I wouldn’t run other apps and capture at the same time.

20K when your starting from scratch might be a little low if you are starting with nothing, but it can be done. I’m assuming this budget is for equipment only, and not salaries too.
It would seem to be defeating the purpose of this exercise to just give you ready-made answers as to what equipment to buy.
I will tell you that most things in life work on three key figures/elements, etc. If you know any two of these variables, you can always find the third.
So if your assignment is to create a biz plan, or purchase plan for a fictional production company, and you have one of the elements (the budget) provided as part of the exercise. You need one of the others to find the third (the gear). What I would do is ‘reverse engineer’ from a specific final outcome. In other words, what will this gear be used for? Decide that, and use your provided budget to research what gear to buy that will allow you to deliver your final outcome.
There is no real answer to whats the best camera, tripod, etc. In the real world it comes down to whats the best for a given situation and budget.Scott Sheriff
