Assuming you have a copy of it. Apple secretly ask the VAR to send back the unsold NOS a week before the release of X, and then pulled it without warning from the apple web site.

Perhaps in a more esoteric way. Many may be forced to migrate from a perfectly good and working FCP set-up because of all the bad press this has gotten and the perception that FCP and the users are not professional editors. The whole FCP community has been stigmatized by the lack of backwards comparability, and lack of interchange. For those that work on one time only projects or those that don’t need out of house audio, color or mograph work, that may be no big deal. But those that need those workflows, or work on things that are freshened up every few years, or might have to get re-tracked in a foreign language sometime down the road may find producers less willing to go with the FCP editor. It doesn’t matter how good you are either. If the customer doesn’t have faith the technology used to create his show won’t be viable in the future if changes are needed, he’s more likely to go elsewhere.

So far no one has presented a compelling reason to “get over it”.
Did you ever have a client that wants free work because in the future he will be doing so much business…yaddah yaddah? I tell them ‘future work’ can’t be deposited in the bank, or put gas in my tank.
Apples promise of ‘what the future is going to be’ can’t even open yesterdays project. Just like the promise of ‘future work’ doesn’t pay today’s bills, the promise of future development doesn’t help me edit today’s projects.Scott Sheriff

They have enough money and engineering dough to invest if they desired they could have made the thing run with a virtual editor in the help menu eliminating all of us from the process. They made a crappy product! They screwed all of those working with budgets that need to think through our yearly capital purchases and have time sensitive purchases. They promised a magical product and gave us a crap program. I have a lot of grace for a couple of dudes righting a shareware version 1 program. Not for apple.
Ridiculous”This is a point many have tried to make, but the answer is always to have faith in the second coming. Seems like a pretty weak answer for something that is being marketed as Final Cut Pro version ten, but is actually v1.0 of something else.

No doubt about it, I would agree. These guys are analogous to the millions of weekend warrior musicians that spend most of their weekly paycheck at Guitar Center. Without them stores Guitar Center and Musicians Superstore couldn’t stay open.
However, let’s not underestimate the gravitas that a small minority of high end professionals have in driving sales to the masses.Scott Sheriff

If you ask me, auto color correction on ingest is an example of an X ‘dumb-down’ feature. Don’t most normal people wait until the picture is locked to do the grade? Who is this feature targeted at? So at the expense of including something like backward compatibility, or XML in and out, the developers wasted time on that. This is one of many dumbed-down ‘features’.
I once worked at a station where the Chief Engineer tried to make a serious case to only have two monitors in the studio control room when we were laying out our new building. He had come to the conclusion that “no one” could effectively look at 20 different monitors, and that a preview buss and line monitor should be enough. He came to this conclusion based on sitting in on a couple of live shows, and not being able to concentrate on the monitor wall in the existing CR and make sense of it. It was too complicated for him. So his thought was to ‘simplify’ the new CR, and save money on items that he thought couldn’t possibly be of any use. I’m sure you can imagine the look on everyone’s face in the first meeting where this idea was put forward.
I think most of us are not like this guy, and know the difference between what is useful, and what is dumbed-down.Scott Sheriff

All that hipster talk of loving the art is just that, hipster coffee shop talk.
This is a business, and the people that invest money in films, or TV shows are not doing it for art. They are doing it to make money. Money that pays salaries, and buys gear. And the guys with the money, make the rules. And if you want to earn some of that money, you have to play by the rules. Their rules, not yours. IMO Windows still has a few issues that may never go away. First is the darned registry, seems to be an issue about once a year for me. Probably because I install a lot of development stuff, sometimes beta. Second is the bloatware issue. Because of the way that Windows uses library dlls, they wind up having to save old copies in the winxsx folder. So over time, your hard drive gets more and more copies of files that may or may not be needed.”I’ve been a windows guy since the days of dos, and have several machines in the house running everything from 98 to 7. My Mac Pro I use to edit with was my first Mac, and when I use my other machines I want to pull my hair out. The freedom of not having to deal with all those issues you mentioned, and more is what makes the Mac a winner. I imagine an 8 core or bigger machine has quite a bit of life left in it, and Final Cut wasn’t even using half the available resources. I’m just going to keep running mine for quite a while.
That said, the whole FCP X debacle has left me with a sour taste for apple products, and I don’t see myself spending any money with them anytime soon.Scott Sheriff
