No, they have a copyright too. You have to pay, to play. And if you get a local artist to do music for you, it would have to be 100% original. Any covers done by a local band would be under the copyright of the songs composer, and that is where most of the money in music licensing is spent. Relationships with local artists can be troublesome do to the nature of ‘who owns the rights’. Anything you set up with a local artist should have a contract in place with everyone involved with composing, performance, use and rights explicitly laid out.
If your on a budget, you can use Garage Band loops or Soundtrack Pro cuts without further payment. Those are royalty free once you own the software. If you spend some time with them, this can be OK depending on the genre of the music, and how much talent you have. There is also Tune Presto on the web.

Yes. Not only unrealistic, it’s insane. I have two words for you. “Low Ball”.
Is this one of those Craigslist jobs? Tell them to take a hike.
That is only around 40k per yr if you break it down to a full time job. Editors on average should make 50k-65k plus benefits, and that is with the ‘company’ assuming all the overhead.
Keep in mind you are the ‘company’, and have overhead. Hours being put on the machine, utilities, insurance, etc. And freelancers generally charge more than salaried editors since you don’t usually edit 40 hrs per week. Some of your time will be consumed doing billing, maintenance, etc.

There is a setting to make a new clip on TC breaks in the User Settings. You can change that to Make New Clip, Abort or Warn.
And there is a checkbox to create a new clip on start/stop in the Log and Capture window.
However the long GOP structure of HDV means there is almost always going to be a dropped frame (even if the TC doesn’t show it) whenever there is a start/stop at the camera and you will get a new clip no matter how this is set.
You can capture HDV as ProRes, which is a straight ‘Capture Now’ type of situation that will roll the whole tape from wherever it’s cued until you hit esc.
The downside to that is you don’t get any logging info doing it this way, and if you need to recapture the clips you’re starting over from scratch.Scott Sheriff

Right. Wasn’t that the point of the NLE in the first place? To insert footage wherever you want, in a non-linear way?
Ripple is a linear tape function designed to keep your EDL nice and neat, and to make it easier to get match frames. All linear tape editors operate in the constant ripple mode as a default.
Do an edit, the list auto-ripples, so your old out, becomes your new in.
If you want to change an edit in the middle of a project that affects length, then the list would have to ripple from that point, or there would either be a hole, or an overwrite. And least in linear editors you had the choice to not ripple the list if you needed to.
So how is this constant ripple idea some kind of “new paradigm” when it just mimics linear video tape editing standard default mode?
I guess it’s only a new paradigm if you learned to edit in the last ten years or so.Scott Sheriff

The best way is for the Director to give the talent a heads up that they are doing it during the shoot.
Other than that, you’re on the right track. It depends a lot on how tight the words are, and how much the talent runs their words together. Sometimes a short audio ‘dissolve’ can smooth the edit. Or adding some room tone to equal the length of the missing uhm, instead of cutting them out can work But that doesn’t always work either. Sometimes even if you can cut them out, the dialogue doesn’t sound right no matter what you do and you either have to put them back in and live with it, or have the talent re-cut the sentence sans uhm ADR style.Scott Sheriff
