[Bill Davis] “No Walter, it does’t need anything remotely like a “free pass” – because it’s a competent general purpose editing program right now.”
This must be some new usage of the term “general purpose” that I wasn’t previously aware of. By your own admission “…some of which it does poorly or not at all (multi-cam, ProTools round tripping, integration with high end color timing, etc.)“, it doesn’t sound all that “general purpose” to me. Especially when X is compared to it’s predecessor, or contemporaries. Everyone that gushes on and on about X and how great/fast/hela-kewl it is always has some specific niche workflow. OK, fine. So in some specific situations, for some specific workflows, it seems faster for some people.
When you can use X as a stand alone NLE (and not use X as a 300 dollar plugin for another NLE) and take any project that comes in the door, not just some down and dirty, quick turn around DSLR stuff, then maybe you can claim X is a general purpose editing program.
Until then…not so much.On the argument that a guy like Elton John doesn’t need a Steinway…well, it seems ludicrous. A typical silly straw man argument. Maybe the real question is not does he need a Steinway, but as a professional would he prefer to use a Steinway? I’m guessing he would.
A few people got some recognition using a Fisher-Price PXL 2000 KiddieCorder in a few art movies and band videos, does that mean everyone should scrap their Red/Alexa/Genesis cameras?
But if you want to stick with straw man scenarios, I doubt Kyle Bush, or Sebastian Vettel would do very well against any one of us in a race if they were stuck in a Yugo, while we were allowed a Cup or F1 car. I might even have a fighting chance against Tiger Woods if the only club he was allowed to use was a pitching wedge.Scott Sheriff

December 21, 2011 at 5:32 am in reply to: Can’t add a Cross Dissolve Transition if one clip has a speed change?[Rob Ainscough] “My suggestion was to make freeze or move back in clip or just show warning as a option in Preferences … pick what you prefer to happen”
Like Shane said “GOOD GOD NO!”.
Who in the world would want a freeze in the middle of a dissolve?
Or have the app start moving around my in/out points? IMO This would rate about the same as auto-iris or the ‘magnetic timeline’. Why let the software or hardware make all the creative decisions??? The editor is there for more than just turning on the power.[Rob Ainscough] “I try NOT to speak for everyone as neither you or I really know what “everyone” does. So give them options to meet how they like to flow.”
Hey throttle back the pretentiousness. If there’s a handful of editors on the Cow that ‘knows how it is’, and whose opinion carries some weight as far as professional editing is concerned, Shane would make that list every time.

December 17, 2011 at 8:34 pm in reply to: Is Apple Being Misleading About Native Editing Support?[Craig Seeman] “FCPX has hooks that allows camera manufacturers to develop direct plugin support.”
Well that is not ‘native’. Native means inherent, or inclusive.
Needing a third party plugin would be neither. To claim a native capacity, while requiring a third party plugin to achieve this so called ‘native’ capacity is misleading.
This new shift to heavy use of third party plugins to make an app work as advertised is a convenient way to ‘blame shift’ for lack of development, bugs, or poor performance. I guess you get what you pay for with a $299 app.Scott Sheriff

FWIW this should be posted in the Business forum, and not Field Production, but…
[Josh Williams] “Oh my god people. I asked for advice on equipment.”
And you finished your OP with this:
“Basically any help and suggestions I can get would be great.”
Well, you ask for “any help or suggestions”, and then bust our balls when we give you a legitimate (and polite) answers, which was don’t do it, you’re under-funded and not ready. I’m sorry it isn’t what you wanted to hear, but it is not our fault. You are the one coming here asking for free advice.
OK, fine, From the tone of your response post, I feel I can now take off the kid gloves since you want to be a total smart-a$$, know-it-all. So here is your answer:
10K isn’t enough budget for anything remotely professional, no matter what platform you are planning for. Period, zero, end of story.
10K might be OK for a hobbyist/dilettante to buy something to noodle around making YT videos.
If you want to run with the big dogs, you need to have at least double, no, triple the budget you’re suggesting, not counting operating capital. Do you know what a business plan is? If not, do some research and work one up. And you will see for yourself that 10K ain’t gonna cut it. If all you have is ten grand to start up your business with, you should look into selling Amway or Melaleuca. You could probably get into that for ten grand.
How’s that?[Josh Williams] “I’ve been a video editor for the past 6 years, I know my craft, know my trade, know my area and the services that are offered and the ones that aren’t and where I would fit into the market.”
Wow! Six entire years. Didn’t get that from your OP. You asked a lot of questions that would lead one to think you’re a complete n00b, and not someone with your vast experience.
[Josh Williams]“I have clients, I will have more clients once my post house is set up.”
LMFAO, I’ve heard it a thousand times! Rarely works out, especially in this economy.
Curious. So you say you have clients now? What system are you using to service these clients? How can you have clients when you haven’t even started your business yet? Do you mean the clients at the company you work for? If so, those are not really your clients.
Not to mention that a single iMac, does not a post house make. What do you tell the clients when your iMac is crapped out, or busy on an all day render? You have no redundancy, no back-up.
I’m sure you think you’re going to be so busy, you’ll have a waiting list, and spend 50-60 hours a week practicing your craft and never have to do anything dull and uncreative like marketing or sales. Oh, and the books/billing/client meetings/marketing/maintenance/etc is going to somehow get done by magic?
Let me know when the alarm goes off, and you wake up from this dream…[Josh Williams]“and in this case I only wanted some opinions on hardware and software.
give me a break.”
So, you want the herd to spec out your “post house” for free, and can’t be bothered to give us any pertinent info like the type of work, rates, client, market, experience, doing it full time or part-time, etc…How about giving us a break? I’m not the Amazing Kreskin, but maybe there are some mind-readers out there that just haven’t chimed in yet.
Why be so ‘cloak and dagger’ about the specifics of what you are doing??? Based on the length of your OP, it wasn’t due to brevity. Could be any number of reasons, who knows?
Some possibilities that come to mind are:
A. You don’t know what you’re doing?
B. You’re afraid that your six years doesn’t mean squat and are worried someone might steal your clients?
C. You are doing this behind your boss’ back, and you’re afraid they will find out you’re trying to run off with their clients?
D. You don’t really want advice, you’re just here looking for validation?
E. All of the above?
F. None of the above, something completely different?I would bet a dollar you won’t take any of the ‘don’t do it’ advice, and will probably post some useless retort. But I really hope instead of wasting your time doing that, you take that time and use it to start working up a realistic, honest five year biz plan.
I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.Scott Sheriff

[Peter Emminger] “Everytime you add a connection with any cable you’re adding resistance and you increase the potential for a problem.”
While that is technically true, IRL well made BNC cables joined with quality connectors are not that big of an issue. The insertion loss for MIL-Spec BNC connectors is only 0.2db at 3ghz.
[Peter Emminger] “If this were a critical application i would try to get a longer cable OR i would put a DA at one of your connection points”
A longer cable is probably the best choice, but I would go with a passive connector, over a DA, unless I really needed a DA to split the signal. DA’s can fail, or cause drift in levels. A well made passive component is virtually fool-proof.

[Josh Williams] “Josh Williams Advice on setting up a small Post house”
My advice, don’t.
Unless you need a big NOL to offset some other income.
The market is already over-saturated, and on top of that, there are a million others sitting at home right now thinking about jumping in and doing the same thing.Scott Sheriff

The Cows forum is mostly about acquisition and post related forums, and you will also need help in transmission. I started out as an RF engineer (NTSC) back in the early 80’s before I switched over to production. A lot of things have changed since then, but I might still be able to answer some basic questions. Feel free to email me.

[james cee] “What is a sizzle reel?”
When you’re deep sea fishing and get a strike, and you have your drag set way to low.
[james cee] “m trying to become an editor, I have some industry experience mainly edit assisting and technical support and infrastructure in post production but an trying to become an actual editor for hire. I’m going to study at a screen academy and in light of my industry experience they say they would likely accept me but they want a showreel. At least showreel is what it said on the website, but when I spoke to the actual admissions guy who is personally helping me to get in he said ‘5 minute sizzle reel’ I thought nothing of it at the time but sitting down to edit it now I suddenly realise that for a showreel 5 minutes is a very long time. As reference, I’ve been watching the editor’s reels of editors I’ve met whilst working and also the showreel of the company I work for and none of them ever reach 5 minute”
IMO, I think you’re over-thinking this. I’m sure they would like to have your money. The elitism of implying you need a killer reel to “get in” is probably marketing BS to make it seem like it’s worth the money.Scott Sheriff

[Bill Davis] “They RESET the software to ZERO and started out fresh.
Every line of code is clean, clear, and purpose built to do what they wanted. Every feature built into the old had to EARN it’s way into the new build. Every line of FCP-X code is optimized for the hardware world we live in today. The stuff they built for YESTERDAY’s editing environments – that’s the stuff they left out. (And precisely what hurts so many with a serious requirement to support hardware, software, and necessary workflows as they were done back in LEGACY.)”
Assuming that is 100% true, how long do you think it will remain that way?
Do you think apple will re-write the code from scratch every time they decide to cave on restoring FCS functions that they left out of X?
Fat chance.
Or will they just kludge the new code on top of the old? Hmm… Pretty soon your shiny new X will just be another piece of bloatware like all the other ‘one size fits all’ single GUI, multi-purpose apps out there.
The old expression ‘form follows function’ is certainly true and eventually a lot of missing stuff will be put into X because there is a reason it was in FCS and other NLE’s in the first place. I suspect once the shininess wears off, and the hacks drop out of the picture because they can’t make a living charging 15 dollars an hour for editing, the survivors who insist on sticking with X will clamoring for the missing features to keep up with everyone else on other platforms. Because the way it looks right now, most that submit stories of using X for real jobs, are basically using it as an overpriced plugin for another NLE. I doubt anyone that has to make a living doing this will have the patience to do it like that forever.Scott Sheriff
