Thanks for taking the time to help me out, Cory, I appreciate it! I’m not well trained in setting up shots with lighting (in C4D or real life), so this is good insight. I haven’t really come up with a final composition just yet, still trying to get it to look nicer first, but I like the way you described I should try it.
Is there any way to get softer edges on the reflections? Or is that just how it will naturally happen? Maybe I’m just seeing a hard edge in the reflection in the trophy because of the HDRI intersecting with the floor object. Also, now that I’m playing around with the HDRI as a sky element for reflection, it seems to be sort of blaring, is there a way to make this more subtle? I tried tinkering with the luminance channel of the HDRI, and it wasn’t really doing much.
Also, this is probably a stupid question, but I still struggle with the little things! How do you mean increasing the resolution of just the sphere (because it looks chunky)? It’s just a polygon object, I don’t know how to single that out and raise the resolution. Or did you just mean to up the resolution of the whole scene…?
Thanks again!

Thanks Adam,
I can already see it’s looking better just by playing with the environment channel. But I’m going to try and add some actual objects to the scene like you suggested and render it again tonight.
Thanks for the tip, it seems obvious to me now!

Ah jeez, that’s awful… Tarantino is one of my favorite directors, and he has said in interviews the one person he trusted the most in his filmmaking process was Sally. This makes me sad. I like the way that basically none of Tarantino’s films are ever told in a straight line, and that was her magical touch.

Thanks guys!
Jeremy – I think I got it looking pretty decent with the all black background and the light actually being a cool element like in that picture. It’s probably a rookie mistake on my part, but I always instantly add a floor and a sky to scenes because I feel I have to, haha. In some cases it’s better not to! I’m learning every day.
Randy – I can see this being cool too, I was playing with the colored lights and the transparency color in the material, and I ALMOST got it looking pretty neat, but not quite. But I can tell its just a matter of tweaking things and moving things around, which I didn’t have a bunch of time to today. So I’m going to play around with that some more in the near future.
Thanks again, you got me moving in the right direction!

Oh wow, thanks everybody! I now have a 3D ball that looks something like the logo (found out the client doesn’t care if it’s exact, because it’s cool looking!) rolling around on the screen.
I really appreciate it, now I can move on to the other elements of the project.

That’s actually pretty good in theory with the lcosahedron. But how would I go about adding a black border on each of the triangle sections? And that can be done after a white material is added? Thanks!

Thank you, sir! Sort of tracing over them with the pen tool and expanding them myself that way is working out nicely. Thanks again.

February 17, 2010 at 4:14 pm in reply to: how to approach a post house/job/company for workI had trouble finding work right after college, and had to take up a job as a janitor with a college degree for a few months, which sucked, but motivated me to get the hell out of there. What I did was look up the address of every post house I could find (in the Chicago area) and mailed them a resume (that pretty much just listed my college courses and what I learned in them since I had no REAL experience) and a cover letter that was maybe 3 paragraphs long that pretty much said I’m having trouble getting my foot in the door and would love the opportunity to prove myself because I know I have what it takes. I think what I did wrong though, was not send anyone a demo reel (I had DVDs, but didn’t have it online because I didn’t know any better). So in my several months of mailing out my resume, I only got called for two interviews. But the second one I actually mailed accidentally to a stage production company who happened to work in the same building as a post-house, so the staging company gave it to the owner of the post-house, who coincidentally was looking for an assistant editor. So as much as you’d probably hate to hear it, luck probably plays a large role in getting a job before you even have a chance to prove what you’re worth.
The first interview I dressed up uncomfortably nice, and was very nervous, and played it too safe and came across weak I think. The second interview I just wore a sweater and jeans, and just sort of laughed with the guy and talked about college and movies during the interview. I’ve been working at the place of the second interview for the past 3 years.

Thanks fellas, I appreciate the help!

Thanks for looking into this!
Here is a quick render I did this morning (it’s not 1080 like it’s supposed to be in the end, and the texture on the box is different) but it illustrates the problem with the white dots on the horizon. If you need to know how I made the sky, which settings about the sky would you need to know? I’d be happy to supply you with any information you needed.
