A really great start is Marcus Geduld’s book “After Effects Expressions” by focal press.

It’s really easy to read for a novice like me, and builds your knowledge methodically from chapter to chapter. He gives credit to Dan, the Meyers, and Creative Cow at the beginning of the book for helping him with questions as he put it together.
