  • Thanks Confucious!
Can you tell me how I do that? Not sure.
I want to do it without jeopardizing my project?…

  • Hi Jeremy:
After working in this project a little more, I’ve determined that this probably isn’t an effects-specific problem. It’s crashing now when I’m not working with effects in the same project. It just crashed, for example, when I saved it. And the time before, it crashed right after I rendered an audio track.

I’m using video from a couple old projects saved on different hard drives that are linked together. I’m also using JPEG photos in the project. Maybe it can’t handle all the different sources from the different drives??
As far as your questions above, um…not sure what DV50 is. I shot some of the footage on a PD-150 (DV) and some on the Sony EX-1 (24P). I honestly don’t know whether it’s 8 or 10bit. Where would I find that info.?

I started a new project, and threw some effects on a clip and it handled it just fine. So it might be something specific to this project.

Sorry, I’m not a tech expert as you can see.
Does any of this give you any clues?
    Thanks…

  • Hi Jeremy:
There’s 881 GBs left on the drive. Um…as far as codec is concerned, I have NTSC chosen as the format, with “All rates” selected.
It doesn’t crash on any particular effect. For example, when I select an effect (any), it takes forever to add it and then when I choose Render Selection, it crashes.

I was just working on the non-effects portion of the project thinking that it would be okay and it just crashed again. So maybe it’s more than just the effects. I don’t know.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Don:
Miracle of miracles, I figured it out. Here’s the thing — one of the clips I was trying to import was a clip that is incomplete because the camera switched to the next card while I was shooting. So what I did was highlight all the clips EXCEPT for that clip and pressed import and it imported just fine.

Then I tried to import the incomplete clip, and it said Insufficient Disk Space. So, it’s that clip that’s freaking out the system.

Now, I know you can divide it into subclips, so I’m going to try that and see if it will solve it.
Let me know if you have any good tips along this front, but otherwise, I think I’ll be able to work around it.
You are a great help. Thank you.

  • Hi Don:
Yes, everything was importing to the 1TB drive just fine this morning. Then it started giving me the insufficient disk space message. This 1TB drive is brand new (I’ve only used about 200 GB).

As a test, I went back to Preferences in the XD Transfer program and chose another hard drive and imported a clip just fine. So it’s importing clips without a problem.

(Don’t know if this is a helpful hint, but when I started the day, my selected import location in Preferences was the Movie file in my computer. A technician had chosen that location. So I switched it to the 1TB drive and imported clips for awhile until it started giving me the Insufficient Disk Space message. Not sure if this makes any difference…)

I’ll wait to hear from you…

  • Hi Don:
It didn’t work. Is there anything else you can suggest? I appreciate your help.
Getting this camera and the software up and running has been one difficult problem after another.
Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

  • HI:
Thanks for your help. Yeah, my preferences in XD Cam Transfer are set to the 1TB drive. So I’m stumped.
Anyone else have an idea? Maybe I’ve got something in preferences checked I shouldn’t have checked?

    Thanks for weighing in.

  • Hi Don:
So I just switched my format back to HQ 1080 mode and recorded a clip and then tried to view it in the XD Cam Transfer program as usual, and sure enough, it says No Media just for that clip. So oddly enough, that seems to be the solution for me. There must be some difference between our two systems that makes it work just fine for you and not work for me — even though we have the same software — QT 7.3.1, OS 10.4.11 and the current XD Cam Transfer program.

It would be nice to talk to reps from both Apple and FCP about this issue…

  • Hi Everyone:
I’m the person who started this thread about not being able to see or hear clips in the XD Cam Transfer program. Many of you kindly wrote in with suggestions including downgrading Quicktime to 7.3.1, making sure I have the current XD Cam Transfer version 2.1 and other suggestions. Please see the thread. I did everything everyone suggested and it still didn’t work. SO, I finally took the camera and computer into Mike at Mac Enthusiasts in Los Angeles (my computer was also having a freezing issue, so I killed two problems with one stone.) Mike found the answer — and it has worked!

Mike says, “It is a Final Cut Pro limitation There is currently no codec available for FCP 6 that will recognize clips recorded at HQ1080 setting which is a data rate of 35 Mbps. If clips are recorded at SP 1080 it has a data rate of 25 Mbps. FCP has a native codec that will recognize the clips.”

Mike had to do quite a lot of research to come up with this. He attached an article to my invoice. The bit about the problem is towards the end of the article, but I thought I’d list the link below because it might also have other info. some of you might like:

Thanks for all your help with this and I hope this helps for those of you who are having the same problems.

  • Hi Don:
The Import button is grayed out when I try to import clips.
This has got to be some silly thing that I’m overlooking or some option or preference that I haven’t chosen or have chosen by mistake or something.
Are you LA based? I wonder if there’s some LA-based expert I could have come look at my set up. This kind of technical minutae drives me insane. And keeps me from using my new camera!

    Thanks…
