These things are always pretty disturbing to read.
When I started out on my own a few years ago and signed my first production contract with JWT, I thought the Terms had been drawn up with the sole intention of screwing me over at any moment of their choosing.
I guess at some point you have to trust that if you keep your end of the bargain, the other party will keep theirs.

Have you ever done work for a client (to standard) and they’ve vanished with it, and your fee, burning a hole in their pocket? If you’ve been around for any length of time, you’ve had this happen.
It sucks.
Having said that, there are ways to access software legally when one (for whatever reason) can’t afford a license. For example, my partner and I, are always open to letting filmmakers use our tools (at night usually or sometimes during the day when machines are free) at no cost, to make their short films. The thought behind it being, people can usually use a break, and if things work out well, then they can afford to buy their own tools.
So that’s what I tell people just starting out. There’s no harm in asking for a favour, everyone in this business has benefited from others generosity in some way.
Respect your tools, as they are your means to an end.

No support for OpenEXR yet. Stuff like this is where the difference between the tools becomes clear.

[Shawn Miller] As long as they’re on a Mac… 🙂 If the idea is to buck “Big Brother”, and democratize the tool, why not offer a cross platform solution?
You’re right of course, apologies, I totally forgot that they were Mac only. It’s a shame, as it really is a cracking tool.

[Joseph.W.Burke] Ahhh…that’s why everyone has heard of Pixelmator and no one knows what Adobe Photoshop is. You can’t fault them for trying to cash in, though…
They’re a small team that publish an extremely elegant, easy to use Image editing app. For most image editing tasks that editors need to perform, it is more than capable.
I love it, it’s fast, slick and very user friendly. I have been using it instead of Photoshop for almost 2 years. I only go into PS when something comes across with Layer Styles, as this doesn’t translate in Pixelmator. Once it does, it will be a good alternative for video editors.
I like that they responded. You’re mocking them here, but when X came out, Adobe did exactly the same thing. Personally, I’m all for supporting the little guys. We’ve seen the flipside a bit too much in the last couple of years.

I’m in the same boat, but I’m going to shell out monthly for Photoshop, and the minute Pixelmator starts reading Layer Styles and FX, I will stop. Premiere doesn’t interest me, and I’m happy with Smoke.
