I don’t think apple software is a requirement for the company producing the spots for the agency that handles the Apple account. While I’m no Shake expert, a macro or two in C4d on a few pimitives could create most of the flipping images and a particle system could create the funnel. I’m just learning c4d and I could do most of the effect without much trouble. I still say it was probably done in 3D then, if compositing was required, they may have used Shake or AE. Anything that high end was probably actually finnished in something like an inferno system. There is no reason to do something this complex in an app not designed from the ground up to do 3D unless you just want to prove that you can.
pointless to argue though. If you really wanted to you could come close with a bunch of layers and card dance.

I’d guess it was with a 3D app. The final may have gone through Shake, but it would be very hard to do all of that flipping in something like AE or Shake. You could take a stab at it using many many many layers and card dance.

Andrew’s solution works perfectly if you import as a comp, not import as a comp with cropped layers. the only gotcha is if the photoshop layers extend outside the photoshop image size.

save the photoshop file as a photoshop eps and vectors will stay vectors but i don’t think it will import as a layered comp
If you have a bunch of layers then open in Illustrator CS, the shapes will come in as groups. release to layers – build
you might need to clean up any junk you getthen drag the released layers above layer 1 and delete the empty layer 1
import as an illustrator comp and you’ll have all your photoshop layers and the shapes will be vectors.

best for least money
https://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/sd/
$300 for 10bit, but it doesn’t do dv, which is ok because dv can come in by firewire.
now I really have to get off to work

May 24, 2006 at 2:02 pm in reply to: COW Tutorials: After Effects Creating 3D Ribbon Textthis was a really cool tutorial even though it took me most of the night to get through it. I downloaded a similar project I found at the adobe ae forum called “create a path in 3d” that you can probably find by searching. it uses index in an expression to offset the letters on the path and lookAt to keep them oriented to the path so it is a slightly different approach. unfortunately I didn’t note the location of the thread. Im wiping the sleepers out of my eyes now and heading off to work. thanks for the great tutorial but you get no thanks for keeping me up almost all night
