I am trying to create a short 5-10 second clip that has images coming up and I thought that the IPOD + ITUNES CD ALBUM COVER AD would be a cool effect to recreate in a smaller format, any ideas on how I could redue this on After Effects???

Also, how did they do that commercial and with what software, SHAKE???

I’d guess it was with a 3D app. The final may have gone through Shake, but it would be very hard to do all of that flipping in something like AE or Shake. You could take a stab at it using many many many layers and card dance.

I was wondering if it might have been done using some sort of mathmatic/algorithm it seems really tedious to have to rotate, or copy and rotate a bunch or images, but one thing apple has are the resources to make it happen.

More than likely Shake was used since it’s an Apple ap. With some time and some good distortion and 3D layering work you could get something similar created probably in about a day or so, certainly not with the thousands of covers, but maybe a few dozen to 100 covers.

Once you get the basic flip / reveal created, it’s a matter of applying those same parameters to each additional layer. Then creating the master camera flyby of all the flipping.

    This one?

Many times, even though something could be attempted in AE, it actually gets done by a firm using a real 3D app. Don’t forget, Maya was used for South Park.

Then there’s the funnel at the end. AE? No way. Procedural 3D, in my opinion.

I don’t think apple software is a requirement for the company producing the spots for the agency that handles the Apple account. While I’m no Shake expert, a macro or two in C4d on a few pimitives could create most of the flipping images and a particle system could create the funnel. I’m just learning c4d and I could do most of the effect without much trouble. I still say it was probably done in 3D then, if compositing was required, they may have used Shake or AE. Anything that high end was probably actually finnished in something like an inferno system. There is no reason to do something this complex in an app not designed from the ground up to do 3D unless you just want to prove that you can.

pointless to argue though. If you really wanted to you could come close with a bunch of layers and card dance.

To me it looks like particle systems in 3D. For example the buildings are created as simple polygon shapes, then particles are mapped to the vertexes. Obviously there is a script that randomly assigns an album instance to each particle.

If you get the new ‘mograph’ module for C4D, this can all be done very easily.
