I’ve seen issues like this with a Canon XH A1 or XL H1, can’t remember which. It ended up working best if I plugged a FW 800 drive into the iMac, then a 400>400 into the drive and the camera. It was still often annoying to get it up and running though.

The last project I worked on had a lot of shaky footage and the colorist was very clear that it was better for him if I did stabilization after he graded. I don’t know if that’s a commonly held belief or not – this was the first time I ever stabilized clips – just my personal experience.

  • question – why use a NTFS drive as your scratch? Even with ntfs-3g and other NTFS drivers it’s still not great and still loses data easily when you experience a power loss or accidental disconnect.

    You have a few options

MacTheRipper then transcode VOB to mov using one of the many transcoders out there (ex ffmpeg)

MPEG Streamclip -> Export to DV stream

Toast Titanium can also do a full rip to a DV stream, maybe only on unprotected DVDs. I just started using this method a few days ago.

Capture using log and capture and a dvd player w firewire out – timecode will be messed up though.

but honestly it’s just a pain in the ass. avoid having to get materials from authored DVDs as much as possible.

Not really answering the question here buttt…

I always rewatch trailers with the audio muted, so I can see how well they’re cut without the distraction of audio (sorry audio geeks!) and Alice was one of the very best trailers i’ve seen in the last couple years

My production company uses the Lacie d2 bluray burner. It seems to work well, but the real bluray issues come at the source – it’s very anal about formats, and just because your panasonic bluray player can play it doesn’t mean your director’s Sony can. That was annoying.

If it helps then go for it. I’d never buy a mini though…we used 3 or 4 of them at a previous workplace for presentations and they were the most problematic computers I’ve ever used.

I’d say a better idea is to make the image fill the frame. Even if you watch it on your tv and it looks fine that doesn’t mean that others on different TVs won’t see your mistake. It’d look very sloppy.

Huh? The fastest mac mini is slower than all the MacBook pros except the absolute bottom model.

My suggestion would be to send the image to motion, program the move there, then roundtrip back to FCP and export. I’ve nearly ripped my hair out getting FCP to work properly with images.
