Let me also elaborate a little more.

Our integration with iNews is not really factored into creating projects or file names. We use use a “Video-ID” that references the file we mastered to, done by hand.
Right now we are exporting just DV25 anamorphic quicktime files. Which is sourced from XDCAM optical. So our import of video isn’t lighting fast but better than realtime.
My thoughts have been that I would rather take a SPEED hit at the import stage than the output stage. So the idea of converting to ProRes LT or Proxy may not be so bad. My concern for those formats are of course, archiving and future compatibility. As we are likely to be holding on to this stuff for quite a long time.
Playback through our server is different than some stations because of the separate servers (in fact we are using FTP to send our exported vid from our EditShare server to our Omneon Playback server) So thats about a 180MB-350MB file per story which flys through our network. So that’s probably the ideal file size, though I think with a network tweak we could handle double that.

    Thanks

    Thanks for the responses.

This station uses iNews to control playback so our file names are standardized for our rundown.
We playback out of an Omneon playback server.
we have 13 editbays and possibly more to come if we outfit our live trucks and photogs with MBPs which is more likely now that they have Cor i5/i7 proc’s.
Archiving stories is near-line, for now we are just hanging multi-Terabyte RAIDs to our network and pulling from that. But we will probably archive to whatever Codec we “Master” to so in that sense drive space is premium.
By conforming I mean the recompiling HDV and XDCAM EX do when you export. Which from my tests are very slow. (especially when your taking FEED at the last minute and the producer is asking if its there every 10 seconds). But we also receive footage from other stations that are in various formats so we have to be ready for that.

Speed is probably of paramount concern over drive space but then again so is bandwidth and drive space. Although we got the go ahead to increase our total “working online server space” by another 12TBs.
And lastly right now to answer your question no we do not shoot in HD right now. We are actively looking at our options to upgrade cameras and playback in the near future.

    Thanks
