We just created a similar effect using two different methods. The first was what we were comfortable with, the second was faster to create, modify, and render.

1 – Do it in a 3D program. Just create the text in something like Maya or Lightwave, keyframe the Z scale over time – it pops out. Scale down the far back end in order to get that ‘coming from infinity’ look.

2 – Download the demo of Zaxwerks 3D Invigorator – it’s a plugin for After Effects that allows you to make text appear 3D. You can also scale said text in the Z direction, giving it the ‘pop out’ look. This method is a little easier to manage, but requires learning a new plugin (which might be easier if you don’t know 3d)
